The best book on fertility I've read or used

This book is truly excellent. When my husband and I wanted to conceive a child, using basal body temperature charting as explained in this book let us know very quickly that I wasn't ovulating, even though my periods were fairly regular at the time. That led us to a diagnosis of PCOS. I tracked my ovulation signals, took metformin, and we conceived our daughter in only a few months. This is particularly significant when you consider that not only did I have PCOS, I was 39 and extremely overweight.

This book should be required reading for every woman of childbearing age. If you want help getting pregnant, staying pregnant, or avoiding pregnancy, you need this book.

I bought this book 2 1/2 years ago while I was still trying to conceive. It had taken us a long time and I decided to "get serious" about it. This book was jammed full of information that I never knew. I credit it completely to my getting pregnant the first month after I read it. I also joined the support website at ovusoft.com. I spent over 2 years on this website and considered myself a supportive member of their community. The website was recently done for 10 days with no advance notice and when it was brought back on-line many members were banned from the website for no specific reason. It offers lots of support when you are TTC and pregnant but nothing for the average woman looking for a supportive on-line community.

Three years ago, I picked this book up, intrigued by the title. I had been struggling to find an acceptable form of birth control, as well as a proactive solution to some chronic health problems. This book taught me everything I needed to know to practice safe, effective pregnancy prevention. Furthermore, since quitting hormonal birth control, my health problems have evaporated. The techniques taught in this book will also help you achieve pregnancy quickly (it really works!) and troubleshoot any fertility issues you may have. I continue to use this book as a resource for questions of health and wellness nearly every day. It is by far the most useful book I have ever purchased, and it changed my life. It will change yours too!

Thank you from the bottom of my soul Alan Carr for helping me reclaim my life again....best wishes to all of you future non-smokers out there-it is possible! In fact, just as he says...it's downright EASY!!!

I was a pack a day smoker for 12 years and had never quit for longer than 3 days. A friend who had quit by using this book gave me a copy, although I hid it in my closet for about 6 months because I was so afraid to quit. Finally I picked it up and read it. I have not had a single cigarette since then-- and it has been about 2 years. This is not the "willpower" method. Carr's main premise is to de-brainwash you and to put a positive spin on things-- so you realize you are really doing something great for yourself, not depriving yourself of anything. A good example is when he tells you to take 8 deep drags off your cigarette and ask yourself if you really enjoyed that. I gagged after 8 deep drags. He tells you to go ahead and smoke while you are reading the book (so there really is no excuse not to try it). Read this book with an open mind and it will change your life. And BTW the "physical" withdrawal from quitting with this method was NOTHING. I had a mild headache and backache for about 3 days. And that was it. Now I am free to make decisions for myself instead of having my life revolve around the next cigarette and it is wonderful.

I'm extremely skeptical about books like this-- but found that this one worked brilliantly. Here's what convinced me at first: Carr points out that smokers are often *afraid* to quit smoking, for a number of reasons. Exactly right: I feared that my non-smoking self would be miserable and unlike my usual self! (i.e. How would I survive in social situations? How would I get any work done?) Carr dismantles this fear piece by piece, and very persuasively. It has now been almost a year since I stopped smoking, without conflicts or cravings. Yes, I would even say it was 'easy'!

Unfortunately I have not finished reading the book. I do know a few people that read it. One is still not smoking a year plus later, the other went six months which is longer than I went using the patch, or the lozenge, or chantix, or any other method I tried. Already seems promising, and I cannot wait to finish it.

It worked for me!

I was very satisfied with the book. The "EasyWay Method" is not as groundbreaking as the author makes it out to be but the majority of the points made were very helpful in quitting smoking. The author's method focuses on the mental difficulties we face when trying to quit smoking and he does a great job of explaining how to deal with and get past those. The difference in his method versus the traditional "Willpower Method" is that we have to get to a place mentally where we realize we are not sacrificing or giving anything up. We are only gaining. I do truly believe that his ideas helped me quit smoking and that I will not have a relapse. With that said I would definitely recommend this book to others trying to quit.

I am not a teen anymore, but a decade ago, I was. I never went to a public school, or delt with teenage dating, drugs, suicide, sneaking around, or all of that drama. I purchased this for a special teen in my life who has had to go to public school and face all of that. I read it before I gave it to her, and I think I learned some things that enter into the "average teen's" life. I hope she enjoys it, and learns, laughs and grows as I did.

Best Book I Have Read In A Long Time

This book was a wonderful and uplifting read. A lot of the passages will be in the back of my mind for a long time. The stories with love, hope and forgiveness really hit home for me. The only thing that I would like to see more in this book is poetry.

You would like this book if you love the feeling of being thankful of what you have. It makes me think to be kinder to people and to be happy that people are how they are and no one should try to change them. That some people are there to help and some people are there to be helped by people. I just think that this book will make so many people's lives so much brighter after having read it.

The thing that really got me was one of the stories that had a little brother that had cancer and it made me think of my little brother and what would my life be like without him. The day I read that story I went home and gave him a big hug and I told him that I loved him.

The parts with thoughtful words and deep thoughts always make me think. I love to read about people's problems and how they overcome them. I just think that it is good to know that someone might be going through the same problems with boys, parents, school, drugs and tons more things that make your head spin every day, and things that you feel like there is no way out of that situation.

All in all I thought it was a good book.

I skimmed through the book before I gave it to my granddaughter who just turned 13. I thought it had some well written stories that a teenager can relate to and a lot of food for thought. She was so happy to get it, since she had the one for pre-teens also and really liked it.

As a professional working with children in foster care through a supervised visitation program, I found that at times I had difficulty putting this book down and then at other times, I could barely stand to read more. This book gave me an insight into the lives of the children I serve that I did not have previously. I also read A Child Called It and am now reading the third book in the series, A Man Named Dave. Pelzer's story gives me renewed hope for the children I work with and reignites my committment to protecting these children.

This is the second installment in the memoirs by Dave Pelzer. After being rescued by social services, Dave faces the dynamics of foster care. Wanting desperately to be loved and accepted contrasted with an understandably guarded heart. It is interesting to hear the varied families that entered his life, the struggles to finally be free to be a "normal" child while trying to adjust to impending manhood. Beyond the sacrifices and work of workers and foster parents, the people who stepped in and mentored him are an inspiration. Like all "middles" to a trilogy this book only opened more questions than it answered.

This is the second book in the trio. I read Dave Pelzer's "A Child Called "IT" first, then his brother, Richard's book, then this book. There seems to be some differing details from Richard and Dave's books. For example when Dave writes about meeting Russell at school and nearly runs into his mother (but doesn't). Richard writes that it was he who met Dave at school (not Russell) and there was confrontation between the mother and Dave. Also Richard writes about dave showing up at their fathers funeral and having a confrontation with the mother at the end. Dave mentions nothing about his father's death or funeral. His father was his hero and meant so much to him, I would think it would have been part of his memories and story in this book. I don't know who is right and the differences in stories and people have me not believing the story.

This book is about Dave's struggles in different foster homes and how at the time society viewed foster children and parents as "trash". Dave writes about his fair share of trouble with the law and pranks he pulls with his friends. Again he spends pages repeating on something so minute and at other times spends only a few sentences describing weeks of time.

Jacqueline Marcell takes a very serious subject and writes about it with such a captivating, entertaining style that I couldn't put this book down. For those of us who have had the stressful experience of caring for a loved one with dementia, knowing that even with the best support system and planning, reality is that each day is about as predictable as herding cats. A sense of humor and resiliency are key to survival. Ms. Marcell not only survived, but went a step beyond and shares her experiences to help others.

Elder Rage was a salve for my raw emotional wounds. I didn't really think anyone else could comprehend the insanity of my situation. It was a comfort to know that someone else was a pioneer in dealing with physically and mentally ailing parents. I also appreciated the practical tips for dealing with the needs of elderly parents. The humor throughout the book was appreciated, but was a bit overdone and tedious at times. I would recommend this book to anyone who is suddenly thrust into facing the difficult situation of caring for elderly parents suffering from various form and stages of dementia.

"As I read Elder Rage I felt that I was right there going through every unbelievable twist and turn with Jacqueline. Her incredible indefatigable humor and pop culture references often brought laugh-out-loud relief to situations you'd never expect! She also includes extensive valuable suggestions and resources to help caregivers navigate their personal situations. As the son of an Alzheimer's sufferer, I know so well that having a loving advocate like Jacqueline in the family can make all the difference in the world. Thank you, Jacqueline, for educating and sharing a piece of your heart!"

This book has a thorough description of symptoms related to various diseases and then offers helpful suggestions on what one can do to treat a specific disease. Using this guide I was able to suspect I had Celiac's disease and so I ordered the blood work on my own. Sure enough the results came back positive for Celiac's.

Nutritional Healing, thoughtful and generally complete

Review Date: 2009-05-21
I found this book, Prescription for Nutritional Healing, very useful and complete. It's a great resource guide to nutritional healing. Her organization and presentation of the material is so easy to read. In part one she offers the basic building blocks of health, (nutrition, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, engymes, herbs, natural foods, etc.) In the second part of her book, she lists a fairly complete listing of the disorders with descriptions of each and the remedies and therapies, and in the last part of her book she summarizes various other alternative therapies (like aryuvedic medicine, the use of music and sound, blood purification, color therapy, the use of crystals, the use of magnets, exercise, yoga, and hormonal treatments, and she also includes a nice listing of pain management alternatives. I love the no-nonsense, quick reference organizational quality and especially how informative it is for a lay person and how she sometimes offers not just one or two modalities of remedies or therapies, but several. She also indicates her favorite, good quality products that one can purchase at most quality health food stores. While there are some products that will need to be ordered online or directly from the company, her suggestions are rich and varied and one is bound to find what one needs.

There's also a nice quick reference section towards the front of the book around/approximately page 70-110 that list various herbs and their uses. Although, I'd like to see this section much expanded to include more of the listed herbs' uses, but also to include many more herbs listed as well, along with any 'warnings' on all the herbs too.

She has a nice glossary at the back, plus generous listings of product mfg and distributors, medical and health organizations, and a strong index.

I'd like to see her ad more illnesses and disorders and go into greater depth on some of the ones that she lists that are currently somewhat abbreviated. I'd like to see an even stronger glossary, and for the index to be updated.

Nevertheless, this is a great book to have, whether one is just learning or is an informed reader about natural and alternative remedies. I highly recommend it. Buy it.

Anymore, it's hard knowing how to treat or prevent physical or medical problems, be it the common cold or chronic conditions such as diabetes and cancer. I stumbled by accident upon this book and have slowly been making my way through it (It's 869 pages!).

I view the book as a 'starter' for many conditions, rather than one that has definitive and detailed advice or recommendations. That's not a bad thing, but it means the reader will need to do a bit more research on some of the supplements/herbs/treatments that are recommended. As an example, the author frequently suggests Colloidal Silver (for everything from ear infections to rattlesnake bites). If you look this up online, however, there is a HUGE split between the traditional and non-traditional health/medical communities as to whether this is safe to use. Granted, this isn't uncommon, but it's particularly prounonced with this supplement.

Anyhow, the book is well-organized and covers a lot of topics. If you have a certain condition and have looked into common causes and treatments, this book probably won't tell you more than you already know. But if you're looking for a good overview of how to treat a whole variety of conditions, this is a great book.

Excellent Book-A must have!

My best friend wanted me to be her coach during the birth of her first child and suggested this book for me to read before the birth, so I could be prepared for the type of birth she was having. She was having an unmedicated birth and was using a midwife. I loved this book so much. I took notes all throughout so I could remember things to say during the birth...positive, uplifting, helpful things to say like "rushes" instead of "contractions". I felt so prepared and helpful when I was in the delivery room. My friend said I really got her through it and I thank Ina May's book for that. Now, I'm pregnant and I'm having my mom read this book and having my friend go through it again for a refresher!

This is one of the nicest books I've read about childbirth. It's full of wonderful, POSITIVE birth stories. Usually we only hear the horror birth stories which scares so many mums-to-be. This book can make you realise that natural birthing can be achieved by YOU!! All you need is a good, experienced midwife, a calm environment and people around you that make you feel relaxed. The joyful stories certainly sound familiar to my own homebirth experience. Recommended reading to anyone considering home birth.

Finally Free!

After suffering from horrible migraines for over 12 years, I am finally free! I got headaches on a regular basis and would get a couple of BAD migraines every month that would last for days at a time. I would be completely incapacitated. I had never gone to a specialist (just a family doctor) because I had heard of so many unsuccessful stories from people. I didn't want to go down that road of getting my hopes up that some drug would work and just find myself having to take more and more, or having to find something different. I just thought I would have to deal with it on my own for the rest of my life. After having a horrible migraine for days followed by 2 weeks of a "background" headache non-stop, I finally decided that there had to be some type of deficiency in my body or that there could be some natural cure for me that wouldn't involve medication. Then I came across this book. The whole time I was reading it, I thought "this is so logical! why haven't I heard this before?" While my initial thought of having a deficiency in my body was wrong, I did find out that what I was putting in my body was the culprit. I also took rebounding drugs such as sudafed and excedrin migraine. Not anymore!

Long story short...it's a miracle book! I've been on the "diet" for 6 months and have not had 1 single migraine. I have had some mild headaches that are controlled by simple ibuprofen or tylenol but they are so manageable and mild that I don't mind! I do cheat and have a cup of coffee every morning but I basically stick to the diet. I haven't even reintroduced any foods because I'm not missing them that much. I personally think that the foods that put me over my threshold was msg and artificial sweetners. Other people's culprit could be their daily banana or glass of O.J. If you are a migraine sufferer, this will be the best $11 you ever spent! You have nothing to lose except your headache! Please try it!!!!

This book is very informative and answered so many questions. The advice is practical and straightforward. I purchased the book after my first visit to a neurologist. After trying the prescribed medication which had far too many side effects, I decided to try a natural approach and do all I could before depending on medication. The doctor had included some natural alternatives, but I wanted more info and explanations. This book clearly explains migraine triggers and how they can combine to push you past your threshold. I was willing to change my diet, add supplements, and work on reducing stress and other triggers. My doctor also wisely referred me to physical therapy which has had the most significant effect on the migraines. I have cut out all dietary triggers which the doctor who wrote the book recommends instead of cutting out one possible trigger at a time. If you are willing to do the work and commit to taking action, this book will help you. There is also a section on medication in case the natural approach does not work for you. My migraines were triggered by a fall on ice and post-concussion. They have gone from an 8 to a 1.5 to 2. At one time, I had little hope I would ever feel normal again. This book helped give me not only hope, but also the tools to take control of the pain.

This is an excellent book with real common sense suggestions for controlling migraines. It's a take-charge anthem - one that spells out how you can lessen the triggers that contribute to migraines and have fewer bad days. I bought this book for my daughter who has been suffering for years in the hopes that she would be able to get her headaches under control. I'm now going to order several more copies for other family members. Here's to relief.

Heal Your Headache: The 1-2-3 Program for Taking Charge of Your Pain

I have been disabled and unable to work for over 10 years due to migraines. I was actually bedridden with migraines for nearly two years back in 1997-1998, and I suffered incapacitating migraines almost daily for years since then.

My migraines are mostly triggered by fragranced products, so I have used fragrance-free laundry, cleaning, and personal products since 1998. But in spite of my efforts at home, I have still be very sick due to scented products outside my home. All these years, I have been unable to shop at stores, go to restaurants or movies, attend get-togethers with family and friends, and many other activities because the fragrances on other people made me too sick. I have also gotten migraines from many other things like car exhaust, gasoline, and diesel fumes; fresh tar; propane and natural gas; new building materials and carpeting; the heat and brightness of the sun (I live in Arizona); etc. etc. etc. My condition is sometimes called Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), but my main symptoms are migraines with nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, sinus congestion, post-nasal drip and cough, a sleep disorder, perhaps fibromyalgia, and sometimes IBS. This book connects--and cures--all of these symptoms! MCS is considered incurable (if it's acknowledged as a real illness at all)--but migraines and so many other symptoms ARE controllable if you follow this book's program!

I have long suspected that food contributed to my migraines and chronic illness. As explained in this book, I had tried for years to determine which foods triggered my migraines but had great trouble doing so. Because I had already been eliminating so many of the trigger foods on Buchholtz's list, I was quickly able to eliminate the remaining ones... and my headaches have gone away! I went from having daily debilitating migraines and being completely disabled and bedridden to HAVING A LIFE AGAIN! I was only doing a partial program over the last year--but that brought me from the daily migraines down to moderate (or even mild) headaches once or twice monthly. I have just begun implementing the full program, and I am excited to report that the perfumes are bothering me much less, I have high energy, and I am nearly normal again! (My perfume-exposure headaches are now mild and go away within a few minutes after the trigger is gone, rather than being so severe they send me to bed in agony for days or even weeks.) I am anticipating being able to get off Disability and return to work in a few months!

Anyone who suffers any type of headaches should read and try the program in this book, even if you have MCS and think there is no help for you.

Thank you, Dr. Buchholtz, for giving me back my life!

I've been nearly vegan for almost 2 years. By that I mean, I've been vegan in just about every way except baked goods. I'm a HUGE sweets person and am now excited to have these amazing recipes. I think the best thing about this cookbook is that if you're a baker you most likely have all of the ingredients or can easily get them at a regular grocery store if you're not a Whole Foods shopper. I also love that the recipes make exactly one dozen. My boyfriend doesn't eat sweets so I make a dozen cupcakes and keep them in the refrigerator and eat one a day. They will last over a week in the refrigerator but as they near weeks they get dry - so find a friend or neighbor to share with if you'll be the only one eating an entire batch! Also, the recipes are simple. I'm normally in and out of the kitchen in an hour with my cupcakes made, cooling and simply awaiting the frosting that I'll put on them a few hours later(along with my kitchen cleaned). The book gives you great ideas for being creative and changing up the recipes that are printed which makes it fun to come up with your own stuff using the basic recipes, although the fancy cupcake recipes in the book are amazing as is. I don't have any vegan friends so sometimes I tell people they're vegan and sometimes I don't - either way, everyone has LOVED them! No one notices a difference between them and non-vegan cupcakes.
Be sure to take the time to read the begining of the book as there are lots of great tips and tricks for making perfect cupcakes.

Every single recipe in this book is awesome, and there's no other way to put it. Thanks, Isa! It's so much easier to feed omni friends and relatives when there are luxurious delicious fantastic junk food recipes like these to make. Her other books are just as great, by the way.

I've made cupcakes every weekend since I bought the book. I know, I'll be a blimp. Can't help it!

I think the basic golden vanilla cupcakes are the best yellow cake recipe I've ever tasted. The version using Earth Balance is best. I put the chocolate "buttercream" frosting on them, and I think this is the hands-down best combination in the book. You can get really fancy and time consuming with some of these recipes but I tend to stick with simpler combinations.

One thing I noticed is that it doesn't specify what vegan shortening is best: I've used the Spectrum nonhydrogenated stuff that's basically just palm oil. It works fine. Maybe the author has a better recommendation, though. The buttercreams call for a half and half blend of the shortening and Earth Balance or similar. This sounded weird to me, but last time I made the buttercream with just Earth Balance and it was definitely too salty and a bit chemically tasting, so the half and half thing is the way to go.

Ah. Unless you've got a sweeter sweet tooth than mine (and it'd be hard to achieve) you can definitely make 1/2 recipe of the chocolate buttercream, or 1/4 recipe of the vanilla buttercream, to pipe onto 12 cupcakes. Using the recommended amount of frosting would be insane and out of control. But maybe you'd prefer that!

Refined Sugar Isn't Vegan!

I really enjoyed the creativity of these recipes, but most, if not all of them, called for refined sugar, which isn't considered vegan. While some vegans are happy to use it, I don't, and had a hard time reworking the recipes around that. It basically invalidated my whole reason for buying the book.

I am not vegan, but the basic chocolate cupcakes are so moist, its the only recipe I use. Many of the recipes have a long list of ingredients but the end product is well worth it. Try the Agave cupcakes; great for people who are watching their sugar and they are so yummy. Also, if you like waffles get their other book Vegan with a Vengence and try the chocolate chip waffle and the Ginger pear waffle (I omitted the ginger since I am not too keen on ginger in sweets)...they are wonderful.

freaking awesome
