I purchased this book shortly after getting married b/c we wanted to start a family. I bought this book in August, and was prego by mid-Sept. I only completed 1 full cycle of charting b/c I was pregnant my next cycle! Her methods work.
This book contains amazing information about a womens body (unless you are a biology major) and alot of it was new to me. I always felt I was very in tune with my body, but now everything relating to my cycle is explained and makes sense! This book truly lets you take charge of when/if you want to get pregnant. Full of great information - a must have for all women!!

Great Book !

Lots of info all under one book. You can find a lot of thoses info online but it's incredibly convenient to have it all under one book. I use the website fertilityfriend to chart my cycle and it's of great use. Loads of info there too, charting forum etc...
I would definitely recommend this book for the one curious enough to know what's going on with their own body.

Extremely Helpful!

There are not words to describe how great this book is. It is not only for women (or men) trying to concieve, but it also points out how to use natural birth control. I used this book to conceive my second child and it worked like a charm. I did not have fertility issues, but I found that I was not getting pregnant as quickly as I wanted to, and I got pregant the month that I read the book and implemented some of the suggestions. I cannot recommend this book enough!!

This book is amazing. My husband and I had decided to start trying for a baby in October. A friend at work had recommended the book "How to Choose the Sex of your Baby." When I looked it up on Amazon this book was also recommended. I decided to buy it instead. The book goes into detail about how to chart your basal temperature and cervical fluid and how to notice the changes in your body throughout your monthly cycle. I had talked to many women who told me that I needed to start trying around day 14 of my cycle. However my cycle is 44 days long instead of 28. Because I was charting I knew that my body wasn't ovulating around day 14. In fact, I didn't ovulate until around day 28! Once again, because of charting I knew when I was ovulating and was able to plan accordingly. Eighteen days later (18 high temps) I found out I was having a baby! This book gives you the tools you need to help you succeed in getting pregnant. I'm convinced that had I not read this book I would not be pregnant yet because I would be ignorant as to what my body's signs were. What a blessing to not have to worry and wonder about what I was doing wrong or having to wait month after month to get pregnant. This book was the key.

Excellent and informative book

What can I say...it worked.

I purchased this book after reading about 50 positive reviews here on Amazon, still unconvinced that a book would undo 15 years of smoking. Well, I followed the instructions, and here I am: a non-smoker of 6 weeks. I must admit, you probably will have to want to quit smoking to accomplish this feat, but aside from having the desire, Allen Carr takes care of the rest. I am not sure how it works; it is my theory that the author hypnotizes the smoker into being a non-smoker through repetition. No matter how it works, I can breathe, and my fiance was pleasantly surprised with my dedication to non-smoking.
Give this book a try. You won't regret it.

Wasn't determined... but I was willing to want to be.. and it STILL worked!

I had quit years ago, several times. I just couldn't bring mself to start what would certainly be another failure. I enjoyed my cigarettes too much to gird up to tackle this problem again.
Then I saw a reference to this book on an online quit forum (a well meaning forum sponsored by the medical nicotine industry). I looked up the book, looked up Allen Carr's site... and was struck with all the hype. AND all the hype by celebrities. WAY TOO MUCH HYPE, I was sure. What was the deal???
Oh heck. The book was about $11 here, so I ordered it. I was curious. I was not planning; I was not determined; I was not hopeful. I was curious. And since I could smoke while I read.... what the heck.
The book arrived on Wednesday. I started reading immediately -- and was now real curious what the heck this Allen-person thought he was doing. I knew hypnosis by reading was impossible. And I noticed he was a bit repetitive. But then, I found myself re-wording some of the phrases he stressed so that they were MY words.
Long-story-short: By Sunday (I was taking my time reading) I was coming to the end of the book. When I got to the part where he said "Okay. This is it. You have to be 100% certain..." I realized I was NOT 100% certain... but I WAS about 96% certain. I wonder. Maybe it will work with 96% certainty. Okay... I'm doing it.

I quit on June 4, 2006, at 8:30pm. Allen Carr is right. I did not experience the suffering of withdrawals that I had the first times I quit the "old way". Here is one thing that I feel help me supremely: When I did feel a twinge, or an urge, or a sensation I related to 'wanting to smoke'... I turned my whole Attention INTO it. NOT away. NOT ignoring. Not avoiding. I FOCUSED on what I was really feeling, where I was feeling it, is it already gone??? (Most times, YES!) Instead of intensifying a desire, the 'urge' or twinge vanished or turned into a sensation or an emotion.. 100% of the TIME!!!!
NO nicotine has entered my body since that last cigarette. I am STILL AMAZED and deeply, deeply grateful.

i quit smoking right after i read this book

this book is full of helpful information on misconceptions about smoking. this book gave me a great deal of hope that i would be able to quit smoking at last. right after i read this book i smoked the last cig in my life and felt really good about quitting. i didn't feel any pain even the lil nicotine monster in my stomach urged me to smoke, i was enjoying that he was going to die soon. now i'm a non-smoker and feel really good about it. thanks allen!

When I was nineteen, I shipped to basic training. I was a smoker at that time and knew I was not going to be able to smoke for four months! I thought it was going to be horrible, but it wasn't. It was not hard to quit (not that I had a choice anyway), and I had no ill effects due to it. The first thing I did when I graduated was to buy a pack of cigarettes and picked the yucky habit right back up again.

Since then I have tried to quit literally hundreds of times since, and wondered why they were not easy like the time I went to basic training. The answers lied in this book. It is purely mental. Yes there is a small physical piece to quitting, but I truly believe for me the hardest part was the mental portion. This book gives you the proper mindset to quit smoking, and does that well.

Take it from a guy who has literally tried hundreds of times to quit, and thought I was what Alan Carr describes as a confirmed smoker, you can quit and enjoy it!

I have now been a non-smoker for two weeks. To those who have not yet read the book, that sounds like an incredibly short period of time. However, I know without a doubt that I will never place another cigarette to my mouth again. This is the best book I have read, as it has given my life back to me.

If you are a smoker in a various state of confidence of your ability to quit smoking, buy this book and read it, then read it again. I had to read it twice for some points to stick.

I skimmed through the book before I gave it to my granddaughter who just turned 13. I thought it had some well written stories that a teenager can relate to and a lot of food for thought. She was so happy to get it, since she had the one for pre-teens also and really liked it.

Once again, "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books has a hit. This is a wonderful gift for young teens with its easy read of short stories on pertinent topics and experiences teens face. Teens I have given it to as a gift have loved it and purchased the next in the teen series. Also a source of good talking points for those anxiety ridden moments or social issues teens face.

Not a how-to

This book is not a how-to; it's a story of one person's attempt to deal with her aging father. I did NOT find it useful to wade through all the stories to try to find the nuggets. There are plenty other good how-to books out there.

Funny, heartbreaking, helpful

I did enjoy reading this book, at first because it made my own foray into the world of caring for aging parents seem tame by comparison, and then because of the author's obvious commitment to her parents' well-being (at times at the expense of her own) and her tenacity in navigating the maze of doctors, caregiver options, and other aspects of this journey. I feel inspired to perhaps hang in there a bit longer and give it all I have out of love for parents who perhaps weren't perfect, but they ARE dear, and it feels good to be able to assist them in their most vulnerable time of life.

An Amazing Read

This book is a valuable resource to anyone who is caring for an elderly family member. While reading the often funny, always touching, occasionally horrifying memoir, I learned so much about caring for my aging mother. This is rich with advice, examples, and brilliance. Thank you, Jackie, for sharing your story with us. I will buy more copies and give them to my friends whose parents are approaching the age where they'll need some care. I am also now taking assessment of my own behaviors as I get older; I don't want any of my bad habits following me into my golden years! It is clear from your Jake Tales that these habits may become exaggerated as we get older and I don't want my kids to have to deal with me if I'm going to be difficult

Great Tips & Techniques for Dealing with Irrational Elders

Review Date: 2008-11-16
This is an excellent book for those who find themselves frustrated by the behavior of elders who are suffering from just enough dementia to be wreaking havoc, but not enough to be institutionalized. I read the book in one evening because I was desperate to learn how I might deal with an elder's belligerent outbursts, illogical thinking and unwillingness to accept help. The author faced similar issues with her father and her examples rang 100% true to me. At the end of the book, the author provides specific techniques and tips for modifying the elder's behavior. I tried some of her suggestions the very next day, and it worked! The sense of calm that I gained, knowing that I now had a "toolkit" of resources and ideas from this book, was invaluable to me. Save your sanity - get this book if you are dealing with demented elders now, or think you might be in the near future!

The story is told with humor, but it is full of excellent tips and education on the subject. A must read if you are a caregiver caring for an Alzheiemr's loved one.

Timing is everything

Review Date: 2008-12-30
This book provides much detail across all areas of growing up. It is not easy to figure out the best timing for giving this to your daughter. Mine is almost 10 and has many physical signs of puberty except for her actual period. She was very upset that I presented her with the book and I offered to go through it with her together. We covered a couple of very easy topics to get through and then she said 'no more'. She is just not emotionally ready so the book will be there for her when she needs it. On item to note: the section on tampons is pretty graphic and I think suited for a true teenager with some experience with menstrual cycles. Certainly not for a young girl entering the early stages of puberty.

Good for 9-10 years old ...

... but that also depends on your child.

I heard a lot of recommendations for this book, and I checked it out of the library as well to look over it myself first. It is listed as for ages 8-12. I feel most of the book is geared towards the younger end, 9 or 10 years old. It talks a lot about hygiene, proper nutrition and exercise. Here is where it might seem young for an 11 or 12 year old. Some people on here seem to think it's even going too basic, comments like "most kids know how to brush their teeth and hair!" Yes, but I knew reading it in this book would motivate my daughter to be more dilligent about it -- she's that type of kid!

The book talks about upcoming changes in a girl's body as she matures. It does not go into too much detail here, just enough for a younger girl to digest. However there are a couple pictures that are kind of surprising, and I had to think about whether my (almost) 10 year old would be "weirded out" by it, name a two-page set of drawings showing how a girl will use a tampon. I decided to not worry about it, and when she came to it in the book she seemed okay with it but asked me some questions. I can see a sensitive child being shocked or "grossed out" though. Other than that, I was very happy with the book and felt my daughter would get a lot of positive information out of it. I think I'd still recommend a parent looking through it first and seeing how they feel about the information in the book, if it will be beneficial to his/her daughter.

a lot of good info!

I bought this book for my 8 year old daughter but read it first myself. There is a lot of good info in terms of general care and keeping of your body. There's a lot to be said for giving a young girl that type of ownership. That said, I haven't given her the book yet. I know that every kid is different but I would say that my 8 year old (9 in six weeks) isn't ready for this info. She'll get the book when I feel she is.

Just what I was looking for!

It is written in a way that is perfect for pre-teens. She has read it multiple times already. I plan on buying the rest of the similar body/mind care books in the American Girl series. I can't say enough about this book.

**** SCIENTOLOGY!! You ****ing psychos need to wake up and start living in the real world. It's all about mind control. It's a ****ing cult and sadly it shows just how pathetic and greedy people can be. It reveals the very worst in humanity... when the desire for money and power leads to the creation of yet another useless religion. Yet another lie. Yet another deception. Yet another infuriating attempt to separate people from their money and their common sense. I don't know who I should hate more... the ***holes who started this "religion" or the idiots who continue to sign on. PLEASE, don't let hard times in your life, abuse in your past, poverty, a death of a loved one, or any other stressful event compel you to give up your mind and money to some bloody religion. Not to mention one as DUMB as Scientology... which contains aliens, spacecraft, and other nonsense perfectly suited to the fiction writer L Ron Hubbard was!!!

After many months of severe vertigo, trips to the local Emergency Room, and unanswered questions, finally a diagnosis of migraine. Frustrated with being told by my local Neurologist that I would have to live with the world around me in a constant spin, combined with uncontrollable vomiting and a severe headache, I was told by another physician about the book titled "Heal Your Headache". As a fellow health care provider I purchased the book and read it from cover to cover within a day. As I was under the constant influence of meclizine I thought what do I have to lose. I immediately started the diet and began to have at least a few days between episodes. After about three months I was down to one episode every three to four weeks. Being a nurse I knew that I had to get better control of these episodes if I wanted to continue to care for others. I continued the strict diet and was advised to add a preventive
medication, a tricylic antidepressant. I have been on the diet for 11 months and one medication at bedtime for 6 months. I know that this is a slow and realistic process. Yes, I have days when I want to cheat with the diet, but I know that the risk doesn't out way the benefit. As with many things in life we all want a "quick fix". I have found personally that in the field of medicine, a true answer is better than quick fix. I recommend this book to any one who is suffering from migraine symptoms. I have returned to nursing, and thank Dr. Buchholz for all his wisdom. My husband and I had the opportunity to meet with him personally for a consultation and found him to be genuinely concerned about helping me get better.

For those of you like me, doctor after doctor, with no results this is the book for you. This is the first time I have written a review for anything I have purchased. His 1-2-3 step book is working for me. I was suffering from a continuous migraine for almost 4 months and was ready to commit my self. No doctors in my area were able to help, medicines, CT scans, MRI scans I went through a lot (with 3 children at home). I read this book within 2 weeks I was off all of my medicines (preventive as well Topamax) I have some days with no headache at all. I am only three weeks into his 1-2-3 step program but I have not had a migraine yet. It is no joke and YES it is possible to control your headaches. He made me a believer!!!! SOOOOO worth the $11.16.

Pleased with the results...

A friend loaned me her copy of this book. I have since bought two copies...one for me and one that I gave to my doctor. I have been doing the diet in the book for 6 months now, and I haven't had any migraines. I was having 4 to 5 a month. I got off my Topamax and my birth control pills, and I stopped taking Imitrex. I feel like a new person. Thank goodness for this book. I don't know what I would have done without it! I loaned it to a friend, and it has helped her too. Just try it....you have nothing to lose!

My midwife handed me this book at my 38 week appointment and said, "This is a new book. Check it out". The birth stories initially got me interested in reading it and from there I was hooked- I couldn't put it down! This is my second natural birth at a birthing center, and even though I "know" what to expect, I loved reading this book and looked to it as a sort of refresher/reminder of what I want for this birth. It is chock full of excellent information for those wanting to take control of their birth experiences, and not be subjected to unnecessary and unnatural interventions that so many hospitals use these days. If you already have the mindset that birth is normal and natural and usually doesn't need a lot of interventions, the book will just reiterate your belief. If you're new to the realm of natural birth and midwifery this book will open your eyes!

The first half of this book was inspiring, uplifting, educational, eye-opening. I found it to most helpful in trying to understand our misconceptions about what child birth really entails. However, the second half, though meant to be for awareness of all possibilities during labor and birth, seemed to emphasize the "sensational" aspects of all that could go wrong. This is best left to the doctors and hospitals who want to keep you in the dark so that they can more easily and time-efficiently "process" you through your labor and delivery.
I HIGHLY recommend reading the first part of this book, especially if you are a grandparent-to-be and your offspring has chosen to give birth naturally.

A "must read" for all pregnant woman!

Great book for any woman to read, whether or not they plan to have a natural birth. The book eases fears surrounding childbirth through the series of birthing stories included in the first half of the book and through the author's writing. She reminds the reader that the female body is designed to have children and is not inadequate as we're sometimes led to believe. The book gave me some helpful techniques to use during my (unmedicated) labor and a better understanding of some of the medical procedures and medication often used. My sister was unable to get an epidural and I feel she would have benefited from the coping techniques provided in the book.

This is a very well writen book, that will help you understand what the doctors don't tell you and don't even know. A book that tells you about your bodys true and simple wisdom and abilities.

I absolutely love this book. I find the birth stories to be empowering and the information provided to be relevant, true (I used to work in a hospital--I know what it is like!) and helpful. I definitely feel good about giving birth after reading this book because I now really believe that just like (other) animals, women, too, "know" how to give birth and can do so safely at home or in a birthing center.

Even if you know that you are "high risk" and have to have a baby in the hospital (or if you choose to do so), the birthing stories would be very helpful to you. My favorite message from the book? The baby WILL come out. Never has a baby not come out. I haven't given birth yet, but I guess a lot of women reach a point in the birthing process (or pregnancy itself!) when they worry that they will be pregnant/in labor for ever. It seems like a silly, no-duh thought, but I think it would be helpful to be reminded of these things when it really counts!
