Please be aware that this book is now published by Square One Publishers and has been since earlier this year. To get brand-new copies of this book, you need to go to the "other" product page for the book HEY! WHO'S HAVING THIS BABY ANYWAY? as listed on this website. It doesn't presently have the "Search Inside the Book" feature at that product page, but the book is immediately available to be ordered over at that other product page. So to paraphrase Dylan (a.k.a. Zimmerman), "This ain't the book you want, babe / Go to the other page." Now go have those babies over at the "other" product page . . .

I wasn't thrilled with this book. I found it a little didactic (albeit in an overly breezy style)--not the book for people who aren't sure about natural birth; it'll make middle-of-the-road moms feel inadequate.

The style is blog-like and too personal to the author at times for an instructive book, in my opinion. The section that's nothing more than quoted emails is interesting for a couple of pages, then becomes overkill; I felt like I was reading a message board.

I noted numerous typographical errors (including a major one in statistics that was corrected with an errata sticker), which detracted from the professionalism of the book.

The section on Cytotec is excellent, with an appropriately firm stance, and the facts and documents to back that up.

I have the pleasure of teaching this course to my clients during their childbirth education class, all are finding this book to be a very easy read with clear to the point FACTUAL information! This is a must have and every one of my Doula clients get it for FREE and must read it by their 37th week of pregnancy!

Thank You Breck Hawk!

I had the pleasure of attending one of Ms. Hawk's workshops recently and found it so informative. The information in this book is not new - it's just written in a way that the layperson can understand. Ina May Gaskin and Henci Goer have lots of great information about the unfortunate state of childbirth in the US, but Breck Hawk has "broken it down" for the average expectant mom without condescending. I highly recommend it!

One of the BEST books ever written for pregnant women!!

As both a childbirth educator and a labor doula, I find this book has great (and accurate) information, with worksheets that are perfect for discovering what you want as a pregnant woman, good research to help backup all the claims, PLUS it's written by a midwife! I could go on and on, so just put away that copy of "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and get this one instead! Inform yourself and respect your baby!

Lurlene Mcdaniel has written an extremely wounderful book called "One Last Wish". Themes of discovering the tragic story behind a struggle for survival against impossible odds. The novel is written in first person narrative style by a character named Jenny Crawford. Who is Jenny Crawford? A 16 year old girl who struggles for survival and understands the love and friendships that develop into a legacy of giving. Falling deeply in love, Jenny dosen't really tell Richard Holloway the way she really feels about hime. Closer do they become after finding out that Jenny's life is completly destroyed with leukemia. Though towards the end of the story Jenny learned that suffering does not respect people and who they are. Knowing that she only had little time to live,Jenny made her grandmother promise to make sure she made out her will. She wanted to leave something meaningful behind. A special trust fund of one hundred thousand dollars, for other sick teenagers. Which she called it her "One Last Wish". As I read the story it made me feel all the pain Jenny had to go through, and even though she had leukemia Richard didn't care, and admired her with all his heart. Besides all the extreme characters,I really enjoyed reading this novel by Lurlene Mcdaniel. The imagery in this story gives you an exact picture in your mind, anthor good reason why I enjoyed reading this story. The story could have been better if the author would of let us know what Richard Holloway ended up doing in his life. After reading the pain Jenny had struggled with it was disapointing to read that she passed away. Reading this story makes you realize whats good in life, and the things you should appriciate. The narrator draws you into the world of Jenny Crawford, which is what a good novel is all about.

I give the Merck Manual 5 stars in general but I wouldn't buy this edition because it was written in 1999. Everything in this book is obsolete. It's very important to buy up-to-date medical books for proper information. If you're looking for a newer Merck, I would buy The Merck Manual of Medical Information, Second Edition: The World's Most Widely Used Medical Reference - Now In Everyday Language which was written in 2004 but is the most up-to-date Home Edition of Merck. However The Merck Manual 18th Edition was written in 2006 but is intended for doctors. I wouldn't recommend The Merck 18th Edition unless you have a good knowledge of medicine.

This is a wonderful summary of general medical information written in simple terms so this is a great addition to the family. It is very current in describing medical understanding of a variety of illnesses, and it provides a solid foundation upon which you can start doing more research on the Internet for the condition that you may be interested in finding about. It even suggests temporary remedies and puts you in charge of how you are treated by the medical profession. This is a must have book to keep around!

This is the most comprehensive guide to health related issues available on the market. There is a more authorative edition of the Merck Manual, but at 1700 pages this edition will keep you occupied. It covers the broad range of illnesses with handy diagnoses. But, what I like most is the children's section, which not only fills you on all the ailments that plague little ones, but the vast array of problems that can occur during pregnancy. While much of this information may provide more anxiety than assurance, it is worth knowing, especially if going through the experience of child birth for the first time. The children's section also has good information on health and nutrition. It quite literally covers the gamut of health related issues and no home should be without it. But, don't get carried away with self-diagnoses It can be frightening!

This book is cheaper [on] AMAZON than the one I bought at my warehouse club. I'd buy it for twice list price if I did not already have a copy.

The text is marvelously complete, yet devoid of fluff and fillers despite its 1500+ pages. The illustrations are very helpful, as is its exhaustive index.

If I have a medical problem in the house, this is what I grab first, even before logging onto the net. It's that good.

All that being said, it is not a complete medical library, you can get more detailed info by visiting a medical library, buying more specific books on the condition that interests you, and be spending hours researching a subject on the net.

If you want to understand something medical in a hurry, reach for this first.

Excellent for Those with Limited Medical Background

Review Date: 2003-01-06
This Merk Edition is perfect for patients with limited medical background. The explanations are more in laymen's terms but it would be good to have a medical dictionary to help when needed. Most term are explained in the book and it is full of diagrams to help with understanding. Merk recognizes the need for patients to become educated and have confidence that this is not a difficult thing to do. Some doctors have led patients to believe for too long that the knowledge was beyond their comprehension, so nothing that they do is ever questioned. I have met other doctors that explain in great detail and even draw on a bed sheet what they are going to do and why, giving the patient the respect that they deserve. I have a Degree in Early Childhood Education, and one crucial thing that was drilled into us that everybody can be taught anything if you start on the level of knowledge of the subject that you wish to teach. I believe this about children, and I certainly feel the same about every age level. Doctors are just people who went to school to learn. You never know what quality of the knowledge is that they learned or if they have kept up with an ever changing field with updates from research all of the time. If you are particular about who watches your pet, you should be even more concerned about your health care. Whatever depends on you to stay alive and for you to take care of, need for you to be healthy, and the health care of your loved ones should be a serious concern. It is easy to understand. cookbook for real food
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-12-21
i think of this book as the "recipes for the human diet". the dishes
therein are not restricted instructions for specific dietary needs,
but tips to make the food we should be eating even better. makes
sense. agriculture is roughly 15,000 years old (we have been around
for way longer), and most of what passes for edible these days is
probably toxic; and if it's not then it does a pretty good impression
at appearing to be so.

so, reader, have some real great tasting food (huevos rancheros - page
30, curry crackers - page 38, cobb salad - page 61, mango salsa - page
94, bok choy - page 97, moroccan beef - page 146) for a week, and then
you tell me how you feel (happy!).

Overall good cookbook-- a couple recipes were not so great

I have made a few recipes from this cookbook and overall I have been satisfied. I made the ginger tea and thought it was good -- recipe directions say to "add cinnamon"--but there is not cinnamon listed as an ingredient so you have to estimate.

I made the upside-down pineapple cake (p194) and it looked nothing like the picture and the taste was a little off.

Overall cookbook has good recipes. Some basics and some unique recipes.

The recipies in this book are so divine! They sound so wonderful, my mouth waters! Beautiful full color photos & advice about certain ingredients depending on your stage of the diet. I would have given this book 5 stars if I could use it. I find that the recipes are far to advanced for my stage of the diet. I think it would be a year easy before being able to use this book.
This is not a newbie book! If you are a newbie to the SCDiet, this is a book to keep in mind for when you are further along. If you are advanced in the diet, then by all means get a copy!
Health through diet is a beautiful thing.

I have a growing number of friends who have to follow a restricted diet and this book really fills the gap in my collection of recipe books by putting together delicious recipes that are completely thought out from a nutritional perspective. I no longer feel that I have to compromise on taste to put together a dinner that we can all enjoy.

The book made me more conscious of what goes into what I cook and has changed my attitude to ingredients. Whether or not we have a gastric condition, we should all make an effort to eat food that is healthy and pure. This book addresses that simple goal superbly.

This is the best book on ADHD that I have read! Sometimes the scenarios were so right on that I felt like the author must live in our house. I feel like I have a much better understanding of my daughter since reading the book. I put into practice some of the tips right away and noticed results immediately. Before reading this, I was still questioning my daughter's diagnosis but not anymore. This book may have saved my daughter's self-esteem as I now feel confident with how to help her get through her hard times.

My daughter's pediatrician recommended this book. It is a look into my daughter's present struggle with an explanation of "why" & how to help. It gives insight into her future struggles & how to prepare & possibly even avoid some situations. It explains the DIFFERENT way ADHD affects girls than boys! Highly recommended!

I would highly recommend this book to parents and guardians of girls with ADHD. I saw many of my daughter's behaviors and symptoms very clearly at each stage of her life - how I wish I had had this book when she was younger! We were fortunate to have a pre-school teacher who was experienced enough to point out to us the "red flags" she was observing with our daughter's behavior in the classroom and how she related to other children, and she was professional enough not to diagnose her, but referred us to neurologist who made the diagnosis, so we caught her ADHD early, which made a huge difference. This is an eye-opening book, and will help prepare you for what may be coming as your child progresses through school and life stages. It has given me the information that I needed to understand how I can help my daughter succeed and grow and how to relate to her effectively now and in the future. Now I know why she's so tired when she comes home from school and this book makes it so obvious! The real-life examples are riveting and heart-breaking and will make any good parent want to do anything they can to help their daughter avoid those pitfalls that these women experienced throughout their lives. Bravo to the authors for recognizing that research done on boys with ADHD can only provide a piece of the puzzle - we all know that boys and girls are different and as a result, present ADHD symptoms and behaviors in different ways, as you will see when you read this book. Don't hesitate to buy this book - you will be glad you did and your daughter will be too!

would have helped me understand my daughter, and myself, better. This book presents the research in a way any parent can understand. It also let me know what to expect for the future. Most of the books I've read ignore the differences between ADD in boys and girls-- not this one. This book should be handed to parents of ADD girls as soon as the diagnosis is made, if not sooner.

After being frustrated and watching my daughter start to fail I was finally able to convince teachers that she had a problem with add, just because your daughter is not bouncing off the walls doesn't meant there isn't a problem. This book help me to explain many painful experiences so that the staff was able to finally step in and help. My daughter is now in excelled classes, not on meds and yes we still have our interesting days but we are able to handle them better. Our social worker used this book to give an inservice during the summer. Teachers are often taught to identify boys who cause problems as add candidates. Girls who are day dreamers or chatty cathys are overlooked, and often highly intelligent children mimic add qualities, and are just 'hardwired' differenly, they can be seen as challenging authority and problems, too often used as tutors to their classmates, when they get home is when they have a melt down, but being people pleasers somehow hold it together all day at school and save it for mom. Get the book! It saved our family.

Oh man, my dad bought this book at the university when I was a teenager and the book was (and I think probably still is) a complete scream. I laughed all the way through. I remember it talking about pot made you laid back, mellow etc but then it went on to clarify that the Hell's angels were not laid back and mellow, in the purest sense of the word. However, imagine how mean they'd be if they were NOT smoking pot? and went on to paint a really awful scenario - can't remember all the details.

In any case, it was very educational and really took the edge off my teenage curiosity. As a result, I never did really want to try the stuff out. I smelled it all the time around me and observed the people who were users and decided I didn't want to go that way.

So this has been 30 years ago and at some point in time, before I went to college, the book "disappeared" from my bedroom. Neither parent would admit to disposing of it but both looked guilty... but hey, now this book is worth $41.50 and I bet that is ten times the price that dad originally paid for it in the mid-70's. Pretty good investment, if I still had it! Heh!

This is my favorite book and my prized possession. Not only is it informative in a variety of ways - it is, as the title informs you, a Handbook for Marijuana Users - it is also deftly written in a lighthearted, goofy, tongue-in-cheek style that epitomizes late 60s and early 70s humor. While the sections on legality and availability are now incredibly out-of-date, the amount of fairly accurate information and the sly, good-natured sense of humor more than make up for its dated nature.

I discovered this book at the library of the Catholic elementary school I went to around 1973. Yep, apparently the nun in charge of buying books was browsing the bestseller list and assumed from the title that it was a childrens' book. Ha haaaaw!! Rick D. and I checked it out in turns and loved it. Of course its content was soon discovered and it was removed from the library (no doubt incinerated), but Rick and I did a joint order (heh heh) to Pocket Books and got each of ourselves a copy. I haven't laid eyes on this title for nearly twenty years, but I can still quote it at length. Like the part that warns you not to get *too* good at rolling joints, because you'll end up sitting in the corner rolling your stupid joints while everyone is going down to the lake for skinny dipping. Or the intro, where the authors say they don't smoke grass and never have, everything in the book is based on what their friend "Ernie Lundquist" told them. Or that nothing is bad when you're stoned, except getting arrested, and even *that's* a learning experience. Or that the results of using a "steamboat" (their term for a big glass waterless bong) would make "even the mighty Zeus shake his head in disbelief." Or referring to the things you will do stoned and not get bored or feel silly, like picking lint off your dog or watching The Flying Nun. I actually think of this book often, after all this time. Highly recommended, even if you've never had a puff in your life (which is, looking back on the effects grass had on my life, my recommendation).

I ordered this from Amazon after reading recommendations on one of my Email groups about this. I got in the mail on Saturday after and sat down to look at it, intending just to merely take a quick look. I started reading it and couldn't put it down! This book just completely sucked me in. It's told completely via emails between a two-year cancer survivor (Susan) and a woman she befriends because of an internet post (Lara) who has just found a breast lump. It chronicles the story of their budding friendship and Lara's struggle to not only find a diagnosis but then through treatment and Susan being with her to support her every step of the way via emails. This book should be required woman for every woman over the age of 40 - actually even before then. The information obtained in this book is pretty up to date (considering it was written four years ago) and is a great way to educate yourself about breast cancer. With the statistics being that one out of every eight woman will develop breast cancer the chances that either you or someone you know could develop this disease is mighty high. This book not only contains things helpful for someone suffering from breast cancer, but things helpful for supporting them through their struggle. These women became very real to me; probably more vividly since the author is also a breast cancer survivor. Read this book - and buy an extra for a friend, the library, your local breast cancer support group. This is important!

The nurse practitioner at my breast surgeon's office gave me this book just after I had my bi-lateral mastectomy. I so enjoyed reading this book. It was like meeting two friends, on-line, and not in person. I could identify with so much of what the writer said. It was exactly what I needed at a time when all I wanted to do was to learn more about breast cancer. I wanted to read uplifting and hopeful info, but all the books on breast cancer had were facts and not the real life emotions that are experienced by anyone dealing with breast cancer. Since this was my 2nd time of having cancer, I had some idea of what was ahead, but losing my breasts added an additional dimension. I COULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK MORE HIGHLY, both to the patient and their friends and family. It adds a lot of insight.

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!!!

My best friend lost her mother to breast cancer and has been a piller of strength for me as I deal with my mother's diagnosis, treatment and recovery of breast cancer. When she recommended this book to me saying that I would not only enjoy it, but would also learn from it, I listened. And she was right!! I have since given copies of this book to my mother and sister who have loved it as well. The book deals with the serious issue of breast cancer, but puts it at a very understandable and personal level. You feel like you have "hacked" into the main character's email accounts and by half way through you want to email them yourself. All I can say is Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!!

Lara and Susan meet through a Breast Cancer Survivor message board. This book is made up of their e-mail responses which shares the fear, sadness, laughter, tears, treatment progress and strength that ensues during Lara's battle with cancer. Susan offers her experiences as insight to Lara, and a wonderful friendship blossoms during this difficult time. Even as Lara fights for her future health, she offers support to Susan as she suffers a loss in her family, and deals with an adolescent teen. Overall, this book had excellent details of treatment options, side effects, breast reconstruction, and advice on what to look for in a doctor.

I lost a close co-worker of 5 years to a misdiagnosis of a breast lump. She had the lumpectomy, was told it was benign and during a 6 month leave from work to focus on her health, her body was unknowingly being ravaged by cancer (with no symptoms). When she returned to work, she got sick with a cough, and within 3 months died of cancer in her lungs, spine, liver. If only she only had known to get a second opinion on the lumpectomy(as this book offers as advice), she may have been able to fight, but she lost this battle. I support breast cancer charities in her memory, and I encourage every woman to read this book to be informed of treatment options and how this disease can be conquered with education. This book was a heartwarming read, worthy of 5 stars.

Informative & good

Dear Stranger, Dearest Friend is the story of two women who meet in an online breast cancer support group & communicate back and forth emails.
I enjoyed this book for four reasons.
One for its writing style. It is written entirely in email. I had never read a book like this before. It was a fun & quick read being entirely in emails.
Two, because it was very informative about breast cancer. There were a lot of medical terms & procedures talked about in the book but the author does an excellent job of thoroughly explaining everything without being boring or confusing.
Three, because the story went beyond just breast cancer. These two women truly became friends & shared their lives, including family, hopes & dreams with each other.
Four, because the book made me cry. Any author that can touch your heart like that (even though the reader KNOWS it is fiction) is great!

Some really good, some deserves revision...

I am not disqualifying all the 5 star reviews out there, but I think there are sections that deserve some revision.
This book was very educational, and provided exceptional layman explanations about the human body and genes to help set context and created a buy-in from the reader. But there are sections where the book seemed to have provided conflicting recommendations, thus causing confusion about what we should eat or not eat at the phase we're in. It seems like more than 1 person worked on the book and it wasn't brought together cohesively in the end. I bet there will be a new version coming.

I've been working this plan for 6 weeks, and just love it! I wish the website had been developed. I think Dr. Gundry has an amazing plan here! We need a community of support though. So, I've started a blog, http://doctorgdietevolution.blogspot.com/ .. come on over!

The book is well written, clear, and the plan is workable.

It really works, I feel better than I have felt in years. I have lost 16 1/2 pounds in less than two months. I have more energy than I had at 10 years ago. It is not hard.

It could save your life, or at the very least - extend it greatly.

If you're interested in living a long and healthy life, buy the book. It not only teaches what to do but also it teaches why we must do it. Everything rings true. I'm doing it - it works - it's easy - it makes sense. We have evolved to a grain & sugar based diet today which is calorie dense/micronutrient poor. Hence: Entire populations are obese. We need to reverse the habit and consume micronutrient rich/calorie scant foods and thereby normalize our weight, health & longevity. Good luck to you regarding your wellness.

All I can say is I got this for my 13 year old son for Christmas. He had it read within 24 hours. Apparently he liked it. He had just read another book by this author at school in the same amount of time.

One of my sixth grade students in my English class, a bright boy who has a tough time with English class, sought me out and recommended this book with enthusiasm. Anybody who knows boys knows how remarkable a statement that is.

I was supposed to read one of Jordan Sonnenblick's books this summer as he is coming to visit next year. I wasn't too excited at first as I had never heard of him and that usually means a red "X" in my book. But this book is one the best I have read so far this summer. I almost cried several times, like when Jeffy sent Steven that note and when Samantha had died. Jeffery was such a cute and generous brother, yet I still understood how he was annoying. Steven was an engaging character with a ton of wit and sarcasm up his sleeve. I enjoyed how he and Annette got together at the end(but who didn't see that coming?)and liked how Renee (who had a really big ego)became friends with Steven and cared about him. I found the scenes where Steven was suffering and crying the most painful to read, and I began to ponder about life and how lucky we all are. This book really opened a window for me, and I'm thankful for that. I only have one problem, and that is how much the author uses "rents" in his book. I have never heard any kid my age use that in reference to their parents. But I think that Mr. Sonnenblick caputured the speech and actions of the teenager well, so that's a plus, considering how little I can relate to a lot of the teen/real-world fiction books that pervade the market. In all, this book was so enjoyable and so good that I'll probably read all his other books. Well done!

Didn't like it!

Sorry, I just didn't find this book realistic at all. The author tries very hard, but does not succeed in writing a well written book about childhood cancer.

It is extremely hard to do and the author was very unsuccessful with this book.

Skip it!

As if being a 13-year-old, eighth grade male isn't bad enough, (there's girls to impress, homework to catch up on, drums to practice), try finding out your five-year-old brother has leukemia. It started the morning Steven left his little brother, Jeffrey, on a stool while he made his "moatmeal." Jeffrey fell and the bleeding started. Their mother races out the front door to take Jeffrey to the emergency room with an ice pack on his nose. Steven dreads the lecture he knows he'll get once he's home from school. Instead he's told his mother and brother will be leaving for Philadelphia and tests.

Steven tries to hold it together. But before long, he's feeling invisible, left out, guilty, angry. lonely, helpless, and wondering "what's the point?" His mother is totally wrapped up in caring for Jeffrey, his dad has become a worried zombie, and there's nothing Steven can do to help. Or is there?

For me, the single most important criteria for a gold star book is that it must make me "feel". It must make me reevaluate life as I see it, and wonder if I'm doing all I can to 1)appreciate my own blessings, and 2)make life better for others. This book does that and more. Jordan Sonnenblick gives the reader an honest, gritty look into the life of a family dealing with childhood cancer. He does it with amazing sympathy and humor. My 13-year-old son recommended this book to me. Two of his friends read it as well. If you haven't had the chance to read DRUMS GIRLS & DANGEROUS PIE, I highly recommend it.

Quint captures the passion of our work in healthcare very effectively. HE is a easy to follow step by step read on how to transform an organization into a high performing "culture." The use of story telling keeps you engaged and the principles/tactics are excellent.
The book helps to recommit to purpose and worthwhile work. Thank you Quint!

Hardwiring Excellence does more than give great tools for healthcare leadership and management it helps save lives. The tools that are shared inspire healthcare workers and leaders to strive to be the best they can be. By extension the information contained in this book helps them to be more efficient which in turn enables those of us who make healthcare our career to focus on our patients. When we are able to do that we are able to focus on safety and ensuring good communication. This saves lives. When I first read this book I was a nursing manager. I came to work the next morning inspired and fired-up to make a difference for my staff and patients. My copy is dog-eared from being read so many times. This is truly a must have book for all in healthcare. Quint Studer "gets it". If you ever have the pleasure of seeing him speak you will never forget the experience.

The book provides a common sense approach to instilling behaviors which promote positive outcomes in healthcare. As you read through each chapter the author builds the on the content provided from the previous chapter. It certainly demonstrates how you can be instrumental in having a "domino effect" just by being consistent and positive in relationships.
