I was loaned the 2nd Edition in the hospital after our son was diagnosed with ALL. This book is so valuable to the family to help you learn and weather through all the processes you could face during this difficult time. I knew I had to have my own copy and bought a second copy of the 3rd edition to share with other families through the hospital. Many other members of our family intend to buy their own copies of the book as well.

If you are hungry for information, buy this book. It calmed my nerves and made me a better team member in my son's fight against cancer.

Our Son was diagnosed in April of 2006 with ALL Leukemia. Trying to understand all of the terms, meds and schedules is hard enough. This book is written by a Mom with the help of her Doctor's expertise. It puts very scary helpless feelings in laymen's terms. This Mom goes into detail on how to comfort and successfully treat your child. She gives you her experiences on what works and what doesn't and what to expect. It is also an up- to- date book, whereas many books were written years ago. As a Mom who has gone thru 7+ months of this diagnosis, I wish someone would have given me this book the moment our Son was diagnosed. It's great for the whole family to read as well.

As a grandparent of a recently diagnosed 3 year old with ALL leukemia I have found this book an important resource for me to understand the treatment for this terrible disease. The descriptions of the types of chemo used and its side-effects have been particulalry valuable during the early months since the diagnosis. The book is comprehensive with all aspects of the disease and is full of anecdotal and suggestions for coping with this disease at all phases of treatment. It also offers lists of available resources to be accessed. I highly recommend this book for parents, family members and caregivers.

Wish this book was available 23 years ago!

I have been a survivor of ALL Leukemia for 23 years now, and really wish there were books like this then. But now is when all these books are coming out, I am trying to find a book or information on how long term survivors can cope with the long term issues we face.

Topics like planning for college, buying a home, saving for retirement. These are issues my mother addressed with me, and now it is too late to start addressing these issues for me. For others it is not to late. We are surviving longer, and this is a new arena for the doctors and social workers need to address.

when i first picked up this book i assumed it would be living on my bedside table for several weeks as i read a chapter here and there. i was surprised to find that once i began reading i just couldn't put it down. the book captivated me on three levels: the array of characters about whom dr. helfant writes are fascinating and run the gamut from a mafia kingpin to a tortured catholic priest; helfant also explains in some detail the various symptoms of cardiac disease as well as the limitations faced by the practioner and finally, and perhaps most important as indicated by the title, the transformative impact that life threatening illness has had on the seven patients about whom he has so eloquently written. each vignette offered a real-life drama which helfant has conveyed with a style one would expect from a first rate novelist rather than someone who has spent his life in the medical profession. this book was a wonderful surprise package.

Courageous Confrontations is AMAZING.

Wow. Dr. Helfant's book is absolutely amazing. He is those rarest of doctors; one who cares deeply about his patients.

His stories of his patients' suffering, recovery, and life-changes were so heartfelt and touching. I'll remember those people for years to come. Don't miss this book. It's a must-read.

What is remarkable about "Courageous Confrontations" is the philosophy of hope offered by this dedicated and highly skilled physician. He explains in language easily understood by a layman the medical factors relating to diseases of the heart, and then demonstrates how one's fate is not solely limited to medical factors, how one's will and character can affect the medical outcome of the most serious condition. He vividly descibes his cases so that each person seems universally human and yet unique. The description and dialogue make this book as enjoyable as a novel to read, yet the fact that this is a work of non fiction makes the ideas expressed much more meaningful. I read this book on the recommendation of a friend and have recommended it to every one I know. It is amazing that a skilled physician like Dr. Helfant is also gifted with ability to write a book in which each case fascinates the reader while teaching the importance of the human spirit in the outcome of any disease.

As an Internist and Gastroenterologist with 36 years of practice experience, I have to confess that Dr. Helfant has written the book that I always wanted to write. Every physician, with any length of experience, has patient interactions that leave him amazed, astonished and enlightened. I can't tell you how often I've told friends and family, "I should write a book". Well, I never have, but Dick Helfant has, and it is a fabulous read. He is clearly, not only an excellent Cardiologist, but a marvelous story-teller. I heartily recommend his book to medical students, young physicians, and anyone else who just enjoys a good read.

There are many fine books to tell you about sugar in your diet. This book however is the most concise with over 500 practical, easy to read and remember suggestions to really help you to get the sugar out of your life. It gets right to work with what it tells you. Particularly excellent for someone who already knows a lot about the dangers of sugar but wants to have practical , intelligent and doable suggestions you can begin following immediately after you read them. Excellent simple recipes which are not complicated are also included. A must have . A must read for anyone who is seriously wants to get the sugar out of their lives especially anyone with conditions that require sugar be eliminated to gain or regain their health e.g. obesity, diabetes, etc. Great!

Everything I was looking for and more

This book was everything I was looking for and more. After reading "Sugar Blues" by William Dufty, I wanted a practical "how to" book to help me cut excess sugar out of my diet. However, I am not an anti-sugar extremist and wanted to find creative ways to get rid of unneccesary excess sugar, while keeping the sweetness and taste in my food, including desserts, and "Get the Sugar Out" definitely provided that.

The book suggests varying levels of sugar extraction, from simple sugar substitution to complete elimination, making the book applicable to anyone and everyone wanting to cut some or all of the sugar out of their diets. Ann suggests several alternatives for refined sugar and white flour that are worth exploring. I found sucanat and fructose to be excellent sugar substitutions. Also her glycemic index is handy, though not as exaustive as other books I've seen. I've tried several of her recipes with success, and have raised the level of nutrition of my own recipes using her tips and substitutions. Overall, I enjoyed her wholesome approach to food, and will continue to refer to her book often when eating out and cooking at home.

I think that this book was very helpful. The background info about the dangers of sugar/sugar substitute consumption and the diseases/conditions related to sugar/sugar substitutes was concise and informative. Personally, I am not going to make use of all 501 suggestions, but with so many ideas, I found a bunch that are going to help me kick the sugar habit (hopefully!).

A very nice feature was that among the 501 ideas, there were also a bunch of recipes that look really good, and they're (for the most part) healthy.

I would recommend this book!

Speak the Word only

Review Date: 2008-05-14
This collection of three mini-books by Charles Capps is a great addition to anyone who believes in the power of words and positive thinking. His work reminds me of Norman Vincent Peale's approach to positive thinking, but more expressly teaches right-speaking and offers Biblically inspired confessions. I use the book almost daily to help train my mind and mouth to think and speak according to Biblical principles regarding family, finances, health, and all things that pertain to life. I have purchased at least 12 copies and have distributed it to family and friends because I believe the teaching is thought-provoking and when applied, life-changing. As a man thinks in his heart, so is he. This book challenges those thoughts and consequently makes one examine what type of words are used in response to life's varied circumstances. It is an overall practical application of the word of God.

Powerful. Illuminating. Inspiring. Simple.

GOD'S CREATIVE POWER by Charles Capps is a powerhouse. It contains three works by Capps: God's Creative Power Will Work for You, God's Creative Power for Healing, and God's Creative Power for Finances. There is teaching here for healing, finances, and knowing and obtaining the will of God for our lives.

Capps believes that God's is true, that He means what He says. Further, if believers will speak the Word in faith and stand on God's promises, they, too, will have what they say. The scriptures support this teaching in Mark 11:23-24 and John 14:13, John 16:23-24.

Capps believes that healing, prosperity, miracles and all the gifts of faith are available to every believer who will "Only believe." There is power in the promises of God. They belong to every believer. God's answer to His promises is "Yes." (1 Cor 1-2)

This book is one of several excellent Capps books (The Tongue - A Creative Force, Your Spiritual Authoprity, Faith and Confession) and is in the same family of teaching as Smith Wigglesworth, Kenneth Hagin Sr., Keith Moore, and Dr. Paul Yonggi Cho.

Review Date: 2008-08-14
I have had the book for quite a few years now and have not been disappointed: almost every time I found in it what I wanted: It has to be said that its orientation leans more towards the clinical-medical applications, and therefore is more helpful in applications such as pain management, relief of clinical-medical conditions and palliative care, and its usefulness is not merely in terms of themes and scripts, it often suggests whole procedures, as in the case of hypnosis applied to pre-partum delivery-anxiety and preparation to manage pain during delivery; As others have said, it is a reference book, therefore the scripts and suggestions have to be developed by the practitioner, one cannot expect to be able to apply them to every case just as they are; but that is what a good professional does: tailor the intervention to the individuality of the client, and for that the book is a precious resource.

Now I understand why most successful Hypnotherapist love this book!

This book is a MUST have for the serious clinical hypnotherapist. I think my favorite part is that its not filled with lame "scripts" to follow. Rather it is a compilation of ideas of ways to approach many particular problems with many clients. And, for those of us who already understand that with each client what you say is so individual, this book is handy insomuch as it offers ideas...and good ones at that. Its sort of like having another hypnotherapist available to consult with.

I have never met Thomas Ashley Farrand, but he seems like a familiar person. I have both the CD and this book. I bought the CD to hear the mantras. I like Farrand's voice. As far as this book, I think it is very well-written. It is more of an introductory book, and it is great for someone just starting out, and he is very good at explaining things and making you feel that he put his heart-felt, personal touch to writing this.

This book offers a wonderful view into the world of using sound to heal the body, mind, and soul. It provides an excellent foundation for understanding the power of mantras.

When I purchased this book (about four years ago), I had a lot of problems with my eyes. I used to get ulcers on my cornea, and no doctors were able to explain why this happened. I discovered a mantra in this book, dedicated to healing the eyes. After practicing this mantra for a few weeks, my eyes began to feel better. After a few months, my eye doctor was suprised to find a noticeable improvement in my eyesight. Since practicing this mantra, I've only experienced one more corneal ulcer (about two years ago).

Since then, I've incorporated many of the mantras found in this book into my daily life.

Peace be with you! Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti!

For those of us who feel the need to take control of our own health issues, or our loved ones, by utlizing our gifts of independent analysis and choice to decide what medical protocols to pursue (whether conventional, alternative etc.), no medical reference library is complete without this extremely thorough and courageous book. It is thorough because many similar self-help books I have read do not cover any of the issues tackled here. It is courageous because the author, a board certified neurosurgeon - Dr. Russell Blaylock - is a whistleblower in taking on areas of medicine that have been for far too long accepted without public challenge to procedures and protocols long understood by the experts as harming masses of people. I don't know of any other book by such an expert who would ask, and answer, questions like - why are we dying and/or made seriously ill from poisoning by mercury, fluoride, food additives, heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides - and what can we do about it? You will never regret buying this reference at this bargain price from Amazon. It must may save or life...or someone whose life you treasure. Thank you Dr. Blaylock!

I think this is an excellent book. The most important health book I've ever read so far. I haven't finished the book yet, I'm halfway through it, but already, half of the book I've read so far is the most informative stuff I've seen with answers to questions I wondered about. The book sheds light on some of my medical problems and is pretty comprehensive, it seems, about the ill effects of each of the substances addressed. I'm writing before I totally finish the book (i've gone ahead and looked at the suggestions for treatment) with the hopes that Dr. Blaylock reads these reviews. I would love for you, Dr. Blaylock to write a book with equal detail about alternative treatments. You've touched on some of it with your vitamin suggestions and some chelation recommendations. I wonder though, what types of vitamins would you recommend, synthetic versus food based? What about those fillers in the synth. vitamins, some of the fillers in these vitamins look strange, with weird names. A lot of them contain magnesium stearate and some other unpronounceable stuff, excipients which I'm not sure are good for us. The Organic Consumers Assn did a write up about the rise of cancer with the rise of synthetic vitamins. What about that type of stuff? Also, what about diet? Are some foods better than others? Are there foods that chelate I've heard cilantro, but how much can that chelate? Is MSG damage permanent? Is there a way to reverse this if a person has had years and years of MSG? Also, once you have Parkinsons or early Alzheimers, what can anyone do? Also, if the brain is elastic, can you recommend activities that can help us along with vitamin/food treatments. This is what I'd like to see next. I'm going to buy several more copies of the Health and Nutrition secrets as presents for Christmas to friends I care about. Thanks for writing about this stuff, it seems you are the only M.D. to write a serious book about these issues? I hope that other MD's read this and actually learn from it.

This book is used in one of my courses (M.S. in Holistic Nutrition) through Clayton College of Natural Health. It is written academically, and for most readers it is not a casual read. I believe that it is worth the time to pour through, underline, make notes, and dog ear this book! If the general population were to become educated about these facts, it would change the view of our commerce and the health of our public. For example, rats fed MSG become obese even though the calories/exercise did not change. This MSG fat is also resistant to exercise and calorie restriction. Sounds like America! Take the time to read this, get mad if necessary, do what it takes to educate yourself about the misguided direction of our governmental agencies that make the public "think" that all these chemicals are safe. Then tell everyone you know.

My husband had been suffering from a myriad of unusual health problems following a back injury. He was given several epidural injections in his back in an attempt to alleviate the injury. Those injections shut down his immune system and caused the mercury leeching from the fillings in his teeth to build up to a toxic level. I had been receiving the Blaylock Report and decided to check this book out. Needless to say the chapters on fluoride and mercury were eye-opening to say the least. We located an environmental dentist and he is undergoing removal of the mercury poison in his teeth and chelation to remove the mercury from his body. The lab testing done showed his mercury levels were in the 95 percentile before beginning chelation. They have been reduced dramatically! Had we not found this book, I don't know if my husband would have survived. If I could give this book more than five stars, I would! THANK YOU DR. BLAYLOCK!

In September 2004's Australian Reader's Digest, the story "The Unlikely Gift" had me in tears. It moved me so much that I searched out and ordered the book it was taken from - "The House on Beartown Road". I had been mourning the
death of a favourite and much loved friend who died from the ravages of a similar brain disease (vascular dementia). Although her body died recently, the soul and the entity that I loved which made her who she was, was taken from me many years ago when the diagnosis was made and the slow but inevitable slide began.

My friend Kath, whom I met in 1980, taught me joy and sharing, she took me into her family as if I was one of her own. As I am of a different background, she taught me to enjoy roast dinners and chocolate ripple cakes. She was a favourite auntie, a surrogate mother and most of all, a best friend. In the later years, I have been unable to be in her presence,
as I couldn't reconcile the angry, violent person as being the same caring friend I had known. She was diagnosed in her 60's which is much too early and didn't allow her to enjoy her twilight years with those she loved and who loved her.

Elizabeth Cohen's book is a beautiful and simply told homage to the reality of family life and in my opinion, a must read.

What a wonderful book. I have noticed that many who review this book are intimately involved in Alzheimers, be they professional or private care-givers. I don't have anyone in my immediate family with Alzheimers, but I read this as a potential gift to a friend who does. I am grateful that I was motivated to read this lovely, loving account of a disease and the way if effects those who are near it. The author and her family serve as reminders that love comes in all forms, and may be asked of you at the most inconvient moments. Don't wait until you have Alzheimers in your family to read this book. So much gentle learning to be done, so much joy to be given, so many miles we go, travellers through life.

Few books have brought me to tears. This one did. The author writes in a matter-of-fact way about the heart-wrenching disease of Alheimer's, its impact to her life, and the lives of those around her. I didn't want the book to end. It is a quick read. Great book.

SUCH FINE WRITING

I found "The House on Beartown Road" shelved in our local library (Pound Ridge, NY) under Mental Health/Alzheimer's. I don't know who decides these things, but this wonderful memoir ought to be prominently placed along with other contemporary memoirs. Elizabeth Cohen is a fine writer and she deserves recognition for this generous tribute to her 80-year-old father, Sandy, to her daughter -- one year old Ava, and to new-found neighbors on Beartown Road and to friends in the Binghamton, NY, community. Sandy and Ava of these are at opposite ends of the verbal spectrum, one forgetting language and the other learning. Elizabeth Cohen herself is there in the middle, somehow trying to work full time as a reporter, managing day care for the two people who depend on her, figuring out how to survive the winter in one of the nation's true snow-belts, and keeping her own sanity as a harrassed single mother. My own mother is 97 with Alzheimer's and I have a one-year old granddaughter, so this book is close to the bone in many ways. I tell everybody about it. I use it in the memoir course I teach. I want to keep it to survive as a classic memoir and as a year-long account by an un-self-pitying caregiver. Book has a lot of information. Sometimes the technical stuff gets to be too much but all in all it is a great book.

I ordered this book because of the reviews. I thought it was going to tell me which homeopathic medicines to take for different illnesses/infections, but it did not. So, this book was not for me. This book is about the history of Homeopathy, Autism, and stories on the successes of other people using Homeopathy medicine. I could care less about the history...I just want to know what I need to take! This book refers you to a homeopathic doctor, but that is what I'm trying to avoid (since they are so costly).

EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO HOMEOPATHY YET!!!

I don't usually use all caps but this was the best book ever on introducing the reader to homeopathy! It's easy to read, and helps those that may not be aware of homeopathy's healing powers that it really does work despite some of the misconceptions out there. If you are new to homeopathy than you MUST READ this book.

I don't usually write reviews because it takes alot to impress me. This books fits that criteria. It is a wonderful book dealing with a mom at her wits end with a child diagnosed with autism. It was recommended to me by a lady studying homeopathy and I am so glad that I took her advise. If there is one book that I would recommend the lay person to understand the when, where, how, what, and why of homeopathy it would be this book. Because I am a mom and I don't have a lot of time to read books with a lot of high minded words written by a person who thinks way to much of themself than they should, I loved this book. She is compassionate and caring and uses words and thoughts that are easy to understand for a person who feels that there has got to be something better out there. When you read this book you can tell that she wrote it out of love and a desire to help others who may have found themselves in a similar situation to hers. I like the book "Homeopathy made simple" for how to treat different ailments and the specific remedies to use, but "The Impossible Cure" is outstanding when compared to other books that I have read dealing with Homeopathy.

I loved this book -

I am a first time mom and started using this book with my baby girl when she was 4 weeks old. At first she did not like the massage - but I found that if I plugged in my space heater nearby and started slowly she really learned to relax. I especially liked the stomach massage techniques to help relieve gas - I really could hear those gas bubbles moving down and it was great to feel like I could do something to help her besides giving mylecon. No need to be a massage therapist - I just used the illustrations as a guide and created my own daily "routine" massage - it really does help them learn how to relax. Best tip - just use what works for you and your baby - this is just a guide to help you learn how to touch your baby in a soothing way that both of you can enjoy - also - I love the tip at the end of the book that suggests teaching older children massage techniques so that they also can start to participate in the care and soothing of their younger siblings - I will definately use this book for a log time.

Wonderful way to soothe and connect with your child

I ordered this book to accompany personal instruction I received on infant massage, after my son was born and we realized he was colicky. Infant massage immediately did several things:
- it helped sooth him through his discomfort
- it gave him a pleasant association with bath time (we massaged after bath)
- it gave me a wonderful opportunity to bond with my son (as Daddies can't breast feed )

I heartily recommend the book and the technique to any parent.

Every thing u need to know about infant massage not just strokes.

when I ve first seen this book on amazon I thought it is only about how to massage your baby, I thought it is just strokes and no more, and I wasn't 100% content about it. Now after reading it I found every thing about infant massage; the benefit of massage with scientific proof, the strokes, which strok is first and which is last, what about babies who doesn't like massage(like my own boys when they were infants), the effect of it on colicky baby, how massage reshape hte relation with mother and baby. Last but not least, I also like how this book helps big sister/brother to set a strong relation with his/her new sibling.

Excellent

This is a fundamentally a good teaching tool, especially when there is no one to teach you in person.

You need to have some prior massage exprience

Purchased this book for my sister, who is a first time mom. She had great difficulty in following it. The set up is confusing. The illustrations lack any directional guidance. You need some massage background to follow the written instructions. There is an overwhelming amount of initial instructions that can be a bit intimidating. If you're a massage therapist, this book will be a great addition. If you're a first time parent, with very little time, find another book. Furthermore, the paperback will not stay open while you try the massage moves, so you need someone to hold the book.
