Wonderful way to soothe and connect with your childReview Date: 2008-07-08
- it helped sooth him through his discomfort
- it gave him a pleasant association with bath time (we massaged after bath)
- it gave me a wonderful opportunity to bond with my son (as Daddies can't breast feed )
I heartily recommend the book and the technique to any parent.

Why don't some of these diets work? Metabolize tells you whyReview Date: 2001-03-20
First you take a self-test in this book to determine your type. Then you can figure out a diet based on relative amounts of certain nutrients you need. Apparently, certain nutrients have exact opposite effect in some people--a high protein, low carb diet may be absolutely WRONG for you. I sure would like to know that BEFORE I decide on a diet plan.
I also like the fact this book includes exercises, breathing exercises and recommendations for supplements and vitamins. The calorie levels are also set so you can pick one that suits your size and sex (not everyone should eat an extremely low calorie diet.) Of course the book also has sample menus, which are always helpful. Finally, the paperback edition is a reasonable size to fit in a purse or in a briefcase, meaning it can go with you anywhere.
I wasn't sure if I was Atkins, Pritikin or NO KIN to any of these (turns out I am mixed, so that is why I had trouble) This book is really excellent and I can recommend it to anyone who wants to lose weight and eat right.

Gripping, but I wanted a little more... just a little...Review Date: 2008-12-09
The author comes off as very detached at times. At others, I could feel her pain and yes, she admits it, annoyance. I really wanted to hear more from her about what she went through. She did cover a lot, but some of it seemed so clinical, so "and then this happened", that I felt like I wanted to hear her yell and scream and throw things now and then. Oh, she loves her kids, there's absolutely no doubt about that, but I really wanted to know more about how SHE felt.
I did, however, learn a LOT about Bipolar Disorder and learn that families can keep it together while going through horrible times. I cannot imagine how it must be for her to watch her youngest daughter and wonder... "will she get it too?". I also want to know about that younger daughter. How is Monica today?
See, that's kind of how I judge a memoir. If I am left wondering how a character is doing "today", then it's good. If I don't care... well, then... not so much :) But I did end up caring for this family, all of them, her, her kids, her husband. It was a very interesting (and at times tense) look into a family and how they change and cope with the situation they are presented with.
This is very much well worth a read. Don't get me wrong, I wish there was more, but there is plenty here to enjoy. I think it would be interesting to read something her daughter writers. What her "side" of the story was. However, I realize, it might be something she's simply not able to do.
Read it if you are interested in mental disorders or just like memoirs. Worth a read!
So touchingReview Date: 2008-11-12
What amazes me is the stigma that STILL seems to be attached today. Why is that? Is certainly a question that author Kate McLaughlin has asked and, no doubt, keeps asking herself.
Kate McLaughlin certainly knows first hand the joys and pains of living with this disease. Two of her children suffer from mental illness and this has had to redefine the life that this family lives and it has also had to redefine what being a woman and a mother means to Kate.
What follows is a heartbreaking and heartwarming memoir of what it is like to live in the midst of mental illness - to live with people that you love who are suffering, sometimes on a daily basis with this disease. The feelings of helplessness that it evokes and at the same time, the feelings of hope and love that it also touches.
You have to be brave to live with this disease and this story shows us just how courageous this family really is.
I loved this story of stark reality against a sea of love. It made me cry on quite a few occasions (I hate it when that happens) and I am in awe of these people.
Thank you Kate for sharing such an intimate story of courage and love

Honest and HeartwrenchingReview Date: 2008-12-10
Chloe was a very difficult child. Every little change upset her, hot, cold, lights, etc. Michael was an easy baby especially compared to Chloe. Monica was even easier. The family settled into a routine. As Chloe entered school, she settled a little. She did well in school and had friends. All seemed fine until Chloe became seventeen.
Chloe first became depressed. Her grades slipped. As Chloe went from doctor to doctor and her depression worsened, bipolar disease was mentioned. With each medication change and thought, Kate read every book she could on the disease. She thought that the more she knew, the better she could help Chloe. Chloe's disease was difficult to manage. The many months, medication changes, and hospitalization are documented in Mommy I'm Still In Here.
Michael first starting showing signs at seventeen also. However, unlike his sister, he turned to drugs and alcohol to medicate himself. He did not want to be crazy like Chloe. Michael's battle with the disease was very different than Chloe's. He became very violent until the family felt threatened. Hospitalization was necessary.
Mommy I'm Still In Here is a very honest look at bipolar disease. Kate McLaughin knew that she wanted to write an uplifting book. While very scary and detailed, Kate writes about how her family grew closer through the disease. She explains her fears as a mother and primary caretaker along with her children's feelings. She really tries to make readers understand everyone's feelings, both family and the mentally ill. Kate really believes that the disease helped her family become better.
Kate McLaughin's book is a real eye opener. I was surprised at the struggles her oldest daughter went through on a regular basis. I was also surprised at reactions from Michael. Kate never gave up hope the entire time, even at the most trying of times. She had a large support system of her husband and the doctors treating her children. I recommend reading Mommy I'm Still In Here for anybody who is interested in the mentally ill. It truly is uplifting despite the content and struggle.

Janet - It has enlightened my lifeReview Date: 2007-02-21
He is an exceptional man, who writes so we can all understand. I will be meeting with Dr. Bruno and his team the end of March, I do not know where my new journey will lead me but I know that I will be safe and in the best of care. I recommend this book to anyone who has had Polio or has unexplained weakness, pain and fatigue everyday.
Life Changing Answers for Psychological and Physical PPSReview Date: 2005-10-16
Dr. Bruno covers just about every physical and emotional aspect-- now if I can just retrain myself to take care of me.
I was able to go to the Clinic and meet with Dr. Bruno and he is as genuine in person as he seems in the book. All the built up anxiety came tumbling out in a rush-- because this book showed he has pulse on my life as a post polio patient and seemed to CARE!!.
I think this book should be required reading for all in the medical field.
Like Maslow, Every Paragraph Grabs the Reader Who SuffersReview Date: 2004-04-18
By the time Dr. Bruno told me to just "rest - chill for a few weeks" I had to do it; nothing else worked. It DID. I read the book again, and again...trying to find a glitch in his neuro-networking and neurology statements, but I couldn't. So, I did go to the Institute.
Everyone who knows anyone who's had Polio, or any sudden onset illness, or even as my little sister, used to drip food out of her nostrils at age 2 (it was Polio - 1954), must read this book. Be prepared to talk to doctors - they must have PPS as part of their required CMEs NOW. Post Polio surivors can no longer accept mediocre care, and repeated anesthesia "accidents (as I did)." With or without insurance, humans have a basic right to respect and care. I had Polio - I knew I did - and the fears associated with going "back" into it were at times paralyzing in itself...thus I kept swimming daily - often for three hours and lifting weights, anything to avoid breathing problems again, or the horrid stiff neck, or ... seeing my arm next to me and not moving even when I yelled at it!
Post Polio Paradox will give the reader the information needed to take to the medical professionals, and to educate themselves, and . . . gradually, safely, comfortably, change their lives from the fatalistic Type A personalities (which did get us through the horrors of Polio), but paradoxically - aptly put, can destroy us now. IF we are real, we will be able to see our 'worn' parts, accept them, and move on to another phrase in our lives - taking care of ourselves. "Polio Class of 1950"

That said, I found this short book to be a wonderful listening experience. I have been an avid audio book listener for over 25 years, and when I see an author reading their own material I usually brace myself for a difficult listen. I was pleasantly surprised that Alyce has a clear, friendly and authentic reading voice. Listening to her story in her own voice proved to be very touching. My only technical complaint is the occasional transition in the audio, probably associated with the editing/recording process, where her voice is louder, or quieter, and the tone or feeling seems a bit disconnected. This was a temporary experience, and always faded away once I refocused on the content.
And the content is really helpful. I won't go into too much detail, but will say that the Shadow Work method, and how Alyce almost stumbled into it by accident (and is now a practitioner and author) is reflective of experiences many of us can see in ourselves. She is honest and direct about her journey without making herself the center of the story. The center is how each of us can heal painful patterns in our thinking, feeling and behavior if we are willing to "do the work". The project of self realization takes time and effort, and is incremental. Alyce suggests this when she describes her happiness and wholeness today as "most of the time". She also gives due recognition to the ManKind Project and Women Within as 'entry points' for many people into healthy spiritual growth. My life is richer because of this book.

An intelligent book, not the ravings of another raw foodist zealotReview Date: 2008-05-29
Of course, they won't, and it will continue to be easier to buy crack cocaine in the USA than it is to purchase the most perfect and complete food available to man. At least Schmid's writing will empower those of us who do understand what controls the food supply to argue intelligently in favor of raw dairy, and to spread enlightenment in our small spheres.
Author should be on Oprah and is Person of the Year. Review Date: 2008-01-19
I have purchased many copies of this book, and I read it over for pragmatic and enjoyment purposes. The author has a clean, but interesting style that will help you see through any dogma about to cook, or not to cook your dairy; and who is taking away one of those options from you.
I certainly hope you'll be able to get your hands on some of the right raw dairy that works for you, after reading this book!

In a nutshell, it encapsulates the history of milk production in this country and re-visits all significant studies about the health properties of milk to show unequivocally that certified, clean raw milk is what we all NEED to be drinking, not the pasteurized stuff that destroys enzymes that are very important for human health.
Many alternative health remedies these days recommend to not drink dairy. The reason is that PASTEURIZED dairy contribues to chronic health problems, while RAW dairy helps fix them due to its enzyme and probiotic bacteria content. The two products are not really even comparable from a health standpoint, though both are called milk and both are white liquid.
This message needs to get out. Certified raw milk is not dangerous. Buy the book. Loan it to your friends. Pressure your local government to allow raw milk sales and allow people the choice and opportunity to become healthier.

I am a first time mom and started using this book with my baby girl when she was 4 weeks old. At first she did not like the massage - but I found that if I plugged in my space heater nearby and started slowly she really learned to relax. I especially liked the stomach massage techniques to help relieve gas - I really could hear those gas bubbles moving down and it was great to feel like I could do something to help her besides giving mylecon. No need to be a massage therapist - I just used the illustrations as a guide and created my own daily "routine" massage - it really does help them learn how to relax. Best tip - just use what works for you and your baby - this is just a guide to help you learn how to touch your baby in a soothing way that both of you can enjoy - also - I love the tip at the end of the book that suggests teaching older children massage techniques so that they also can start to participate in the care and soothing of their younger siblings - I will definately use this book for a log time.
