Helpful information, even for healthy young people, Terrible recipes

I found a lot of helpful information in this book. Heart disease is explained in a clear manner, and this book is an easy read because the author is so darn funny. I have so many favorite lines from this book. I was seriously cracking up while I read the book (and read it in a day off work, btw--very fast read). I do not follow everything to a T--I still salt my food, but I use less salt and I use almost no prepackaged food at all. I do look at sodium content now. I also buy reduced fat cheese, too. Pritikin suggests nonfat cheese, though. I would feel deprived if I followed all of the diet ideas perfectly. Instead, I look at my healthy vegetarian diet through new eyes and see where I can make it healthier, but still satisfying and delicious. My husband appreciated that Pritikin is scientifically based and has so many studies done on it. One caveat--I am not a fan of the recipes. I'd rather not eat than eat awful food! I am very picky, though. And I'm not a fan of fat and sugar substitutes--I say just use less of the real thing!

Nothing tastes as good as "thin" feels, so the expression goes.

Well, life "tastes" the best--you can just enjoy it, be here for yourself, for others and if you're reading this, you probably are wanting to "save" yourself or other loved ones. Don't get into fear--the diet, let alone going to Pritikin, is not torture and deprivation, you'll not starve at all, you'll fill yourself up on people nourishment and fun! You'll laugh, you'll smile, you'll entertain and tell stories and you'll discover that miracles can happen, your health can be improved or restored. You'll regain your confidence in yourself, you'll walk tall. You'll be back in control and in charge but you won't have to be some dictator to all your rebellious voices so much any more, those voices that say to you that you deserve all the fatty meals, ice cream and cookies or just the normal toxic diet that most Americans eat every day of their lives, the wonderful meals your mother cooked for you (sorry to the well intended moms out there, don't think they had Pritikin in those days). Those voices, to the contrary, will become your buddies for they care about you in that strange manner and ways they've interacted with you over the years. I've been to "Pritikin" ten times over the years. I owe my life to these folks, the principles. Am not "fixed" or "perfect," in fact, I keep going back for a tune up and reinforcement. Yet, I have no doubt that my life has been greatly extended and same with countless others. I have witnessed this, seen so many times with my eyes, heard with my ears the transformations that Pritikin has made in the lives of so many. It is not torture, being there is fun. Learning is fun. Well, the "diet" is not a diet, it is an education, learning to start a new lifestyle within what you already have. Trust me, you'll like it. The staff is great and, I'd have to say, the guests keep me coming back. They are usually somewhat older and sort-of-like-me are either there because they've hit somewhere close to their bottom (and want to live!) or just because they are now so healthy thanks to Pritikin that they keep coming back--it's a great vacation (believe it or not--consider believing it tho) there. Buy this book. And, better yet, buy the experience (and the book). Hopefully, I'll see you there at Pritikin and by the way, I'm single, and available, lol, so hope to see you there and we'll dance!

You must read this book before going on any medications

The Pritikin Edge is a wonderful book. It is filled with a number of great tips that will teach you how to live a healthier lifestyle. Unlike many health books that require you to go on specific diets or exercise on specific equiptment, the Pritikin Edge continues to do what the Pritikin program has done for nearly 50 years, educate! Reading this book will enlighten you and provide you with tools to jump start your healthy lifestyle program by learning how to cope with stress, eat a healthy diet, and engage in appropriate exercise for overall well being. Nothing compares to two weeks at the Pritikin Center in Miami, but if you cant make it there, this is the next best thing. After reading this book you will certainly be hungry, but not for more food, only more knowlege and health tips. I read the Pritikin Principle and loved that book too. I have found more tips on their web site. This book is well worth the minimal time and effort to read the book. Buy it used or new here on amazon. Its a small price to pay in comparison to that bypass procedure! Good luck in your search for health. The Pritikin Edge: 10 Essential Ingredients for a Long and Delicious Life

The Pritikin Edge is not a fad diet book. It is a book about living a healthier life through nutritious, low-fat foods, moderate exercise and stress reduction. The authors build upon more than three decades of scientific research and experience at the Pritikin Longevity Center. But they have not written a ponderous nutrition textbook. Instead, the authors offer a practical, easy-to-read (though science-based) method of healthy living with an emphasis on promoting heart health. This book is for readers of all walks of life who very simply seek a healthier lifestyle. The Pritikin Edge centers on choosing the right foods and offers targeted exercises and recipes from the Pritikin Longevity Center. I recommend a copy for yourself and some extra copies as holiday or birthday gifts for family and friends. Don't postpone taking care of yourself any longer.

The Pritikin Edge is a concise, comprehensive and easy to digest nutritional, exercise, and life-style program that will lead you from lethargy to energy and from poor health to good health. You will also learn the importance of taking care of your mind in taking care of your body. If you like yourself, give yourself a gift. Buy a few for people you love as well. Pritikin is a way of life, not a fad, and we all need a permanent, science-based, practical way to stay healthy and feel good.

I finished reading this book over the weekend and it is now marked up, underlined and dog eared. Roz cuts to the heart of the matter without a lot of fluff and fru fru to wade through. It has made me look deep into some things I have avoided and with her insight and way of saying things it is all so much more clear. I have a list of friends I am going to buy copies for. I have never been one to keep a good thing to myself.. and this is one book that needs to be read by anyone and everyone. I told my boss and good friend about the book and while he can not bring himself to write out panties in a message he does write PYBGONADWI...but today he sent a reply to a "gripe message" I had sent with this DGYBGPIAW. I will let you figure it out. Read this book and put it into action. You will be oh so glad you did!

Put Your Big Girl Panties on and Deal with it---provides women with a no excuse framework that frees them up to live life authenicly and outrageously. Roz's stories are powerful and potent. They highlight the key messages in her book about how to get what you want in your life! It's about designing your life so you end up where you want to be. A great book for women of all ages!

Good But Not Great

Although this short, little book is MUCH better than many books bigger and more expensive it still had several disappointing aspects to it. I bought both this book and the tile that matches the title and they would make a great gift for a gal facing forty or any other life milestone once she was out of her twenties and early thirties. My reasoning behind that comment is all the stories of people making BAD decisions--including the author being honest herself--and then needing to dig themselves out of the pit they originally threw themselves into. We all make mistakes. But rather than a look back, why not a more insightful anticipation of making good decisions! Experience may be the best teacher, but I prefer my experiences teach me how to love, wear big diamonds and be happy. Instead of repairing my battered self and self-esteem after too many relationship mis-steps, bad job decisions, etc. Good book but a little sad at how foolish so many people can be at building their lives.

Don't miss this book

If you have been waiting to find that one book that will help you pull your life together, your lucky day has arrived. Put On Your Big Girl Panties and Deal With It is that book--one that you will hold close to your heart--my copy is dog-eared and yellow highlighted page after page. Roz Van Meter offers solid advice on how to face life as a grown-up based upon her years of experience as a life coach--and she does it with grace, charm, and a wicked sense of humor. Warning: you will laugh out loud more times than you can count. Simply put, Roz is warm, wise, and the girlfriend you have always wanted. Buy this book for yourself, give copies to your daughter and to your sisters (both bio and chosen) because this is advice you will want to share and talk over with people you really care about.

psychologically qualified yet girlfriend-friendly advice

Review Date: 2007-10-01
Have you ever had a girlfriend who just got you and could make you see that you were overreacting but would also make you feel completely at ease with your idiosyncrasies? Aren't they the best? Roz Van Meter offers her psychologically qualified yet girlfriend-friendly advice in her book, "Put Your Big Girl Panties On and Deal With It..." and it's just like having that special girlfriend by your side or a life coach with a fantastic sense of humor on speed dial.

It's a no-nonsense guide to getting what you want, but it's also a little book of inspiration to getting what you need. Roz shares her own stories to relay some messages and also those of people she knows. It's the latest thoughts on self help psychology, marriage, relationship and sex therapy, and life coaching, but it is done in such a light hearted and easy going tone that you don't realize you're getting a bigger message until it has already sunk in. The book is made light and fun by the analogy of knickers in every form and relating them to what you want in life. For instance, figuratively (or literally) putting on those practical, comfortable, business like panties to get a goal attained, or sliding into that risqué g-string when the lights go down in the city for some fun. Humor aside, the book offers advice on everything from how to say no and mean it to how to say yes and feel free enough to enjoy it. It explores ways in which you can reconnect with your inner child and nourish her and also take control and know when to get that kid out from behind the driver's wheel. This book is about organizing your life, one drawer at a time, learning to laugh at yourself, being a friend, and charging head on into passion for life.

Roz Van Meter is a psychotherapist, but she writes like that best friend who spells it all out for you in a fun and endearing way. Buy a copy of "Put Your Big Girl Panties On and Deal With It..." for yourself, one for your husband (who just might learn a thing about the female persuasion), and one for every close girlfriend you have. You'll be looking at yourself and your underwear drawer in a whole new light.

I really enoyed the simplicty of this book, I felt like the author was talking right to me. I'm a Mom and don't have time to workout so the six minute chunks were perfect. I really enjoyed the nutritional info as it was easy to follow and something that I could manage.
The exercises are very doable and I've really enjoyed the DVD's that go with this book. It's a great combination and well worth the purchase.

I followed the Sexy in 6 program after the birth of my second child and saw results. The eat plan is sensible and not too hard to figure out, but my favorite part is the DVD. Along with the book I got the Sexy in 6 blue DVD. That has been great. It is easy to do and Tracey keeps it fun. Before I had kids I was much better at going to the gym, but not it is a lot easier to workout with the DVD at home. I would recommend this book.

I stumbled onto this book while looking for a copy of Dig Dig Digging (which my son prefers with near religious intensity). Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball has adorable and high quality illustrations - even down to the look on the butterfly's face that is caught in a wombat yell. It also contains very funny and comforting prose - not too long and not too short.

I cannot think of a more rousing endorsement than to say that I am currently searching Amazon for other books by the author to add to our children's library.

This wonderful rhyming book is a favorite of my 2- and 3-year-olds. The meticulous illustrations encourage discovery and attention to detail. You notice the wombat, of course, but you also notice the reaction of other characters to the wombat. You also discover many animals that are indigenous to Australia, showing the diversity in nature.

The charming story leads the little wombat home to his mother, where he curls up and goes to sleep. It's a comfortable story of independent play and the importance of home and family.

I work in daycare with children mostly between the ages of 18 months and 3 years, and they just LOVE this book! They call it "the boom book" because when the wombat jumps to make noise when he falls down, we always say "BOOM!" all together. They also love the page with all the funny faces, and we have to take 10 minutes to make all the faces together. A must have!

Great comprehensive book on nutrition.

Review Date: 2008-03-12
This is exactly the book I've been looking for! Objective, to-the-point facts on nutrition, vitamins, eating habits, and other topics such as preservatives, toxins, etc. I've seen too many "fad" nutritional books that are biased toward either vegan/vegetarian, low carb, low fat, high fat-low carb, etc. This book seems to be objective enough to allow the readers to decide on their own what diet path to take. This book, a good diet, and exercise can stand on their own and I feel this book can last a long time as a good reference book. Personally, I prefer a well-rounded diet (including some red meat), chicken, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts. I lean toward organic or natural foods. Should readers decide to focus on another particular diet, they can supplement this book with one that follows their philosophy. I highly recommend this book as a stand alone or as a starting point to other diets.

An excellent text for those looking to gain muscular mass
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-19
Although I am a competetive powerlifter (focus is on strength over mass) I was quite impressed with this book. It covers a lot of material and should become a standard in the bodybuilding as well as other lifting communities. It is the best book I have ever read on explaining and applying HIT. I personally am not an advocate of one training style or another...that is to say I believe in whatever works (to quote Alwyn Cosgrove "Methods are many,Principles are few, Methods often change, Principles never do."). Any experienced coach will likely tell you that you can take something useful from all training methods, as there is no such thing as one universal type of training for all applications. I used to view HIT as more of a fad or something that could only work in the short term, largely because the books I read on this type of training were relatively typical of most books in the lifting community; written by over-zealous authors and lacking any real research or scientific reasoning. My views have now changed after reading this excellent book on the hows, whys, and applications of HIT for gaining muscle mass. HIT is definately a viable type of training to add to the toolbox of all lifters, and could very well be the most reliable system of training for most bodybuilders in particular. Although the book does not have a large list of citations at the end, the author nonetheless does refer in most cases, to what he bases his information on and the studies that back his reasoning. This book is packed full of very logical and clear information, without pictures. It is written in a way that is not boring and monotonous and it is easy to understand what the author is trying to say. Although as a Powerlifter and all-round lifter I disagree with the idea of training by isolating individual muscle groups (which as a bodybuilder the author naturally encourages), this book really is fantastic. It deserves a place among the classics, and is a legitamate, reliable source for lifters of all sorts and all levels. I would especially recommend it as an excellant base for the beginning lifter (who is primarily interested in mass and not pure strength), hopefully preventing them from the years of wasted time many go through because of poor sources of information. Pick this one up it is well worth it, and the price is extremely reasonable.

Great book! - from an experienced weight trainer

I haveTraining for Mass

I have over 20 years of weight training experience and have won or placed well in competitions. All of my training has been using the common high volume training methods that Gordon attempts to dispel in his book. His writing style is entertaining while he methodically breaks down the volume training strategy and proves a compelling case for the high-intensity training style.

My conclusion... While I made some good gains using the volume training, I believe my gains should be better given my consistency with my training and nutrition. His book has given me many new ideas, I am motivated again to get to the gym while I am using the high intensity training model he lays out very well in the book. So far, I am spending less time in the gym, the workouts are more challenging and interesting and I have noticed some early progress (I've only been doing it for approximately 4 weeks).

Keep an open mind to new ideas if you are like I was (pretty set in my training routines). You might find, like I did, that what we have relied on for years isn't the only way and, better yet, that there just might be a better way. Give it a try like I am doing.

All You Need

All you need is in this book; eliminate unneccesary workouts that are not good mass builders and abandon high volume marathon sessions that are ruinous to your joints and free time. This is unlike anything you've ever read. An intellectual approach that explains WHY a high intensity routine is effective. I love it.

Well Worth Reading

Review Date: 2008-09-16
I can think of few topics outside of politics and religion that are more divisive than the subject of effective bodybuilding techniques. Mr. LaVelle, however, offers a well-reasoned and well-written contribution to the debate.

If your goal is to be most efficient with the time you spend in the gym and you want to avoid setbacks caused by injuries and over-training, you owe it to yourself to read Mr. LaVelle's book. If on the other hand, you get some sort of validation from being able to talk about how much time you spend working out, then, by all means, keep doing what you are doing.

I would caution you, though, read the book carefully. The author is quick to point out that his methods need to be tailored to the individual. This is not a "do exactly what I tell you" cookbook. I believe that when you read the book you will find, as I did, that the author's ideas are not only well supported but also seem intuitively right.

Decent guide to building mass

Overall, this was a pretty good guide on how to perform HIT for building mass; the author was clearly a philosophy major in college based on how he picks apart Volume training and other methods.

I would have preferred a bit more instruction on what to expect amongst the various stages when starting out, hitting plateus, etc, but overall I think for someone that is trying to determine whether HIT or volume is best, this book will be helpful

The theory in this book is that most people have too little stomach acid and that antacids not only do not help you but they make the problem much worse. So here is a simple test to try if you want to see if you have too little stomach acid. The next time you feel the need for an antacid mix 2 parts standard vinegar with 1 part honey. Then take two tablespoons. If you have too little acid the vinegar will help and you will feel better. If you get worse than you probably have too much acid and you can go ahead and take your antacids. I now keep a bottle of this vile mix in my fridge and I no longer take antacids. It is nasty to take but it works like a charm, every time! If you find out you have too little acid then you should buy this book immediately and read it cover to cover. They suggest using lemon juice at meal times to help replace the acid you need. Much better than taking vinegar too! There is so much good information in here that you do not want to miss it.

When I would wake up in the morning, I would have a burning feeling in my esophagus even while taking the well known proton pump inhibitors. I had no energy and I really felt like I wasn't going to live much longer. I immediately flew to Dr. Wright's clinic and was tested there when they confirmed moderate hypochlorhydria. With everything they have recommended, I can't believe that I am no longer plagued with acid reflux. In addition to the low stomach acid, I was very ill with severe yeast overgrowth throughout my body and I wasn't assimilating any vitamins or nutrients. I thank God for Dr. Wright. I will be on his treatment plan for a year (currently it's been 6 months)and then will get re-tested to see if I am finally producing enough stomach acid on my own to help digest my food. Over the past 17 years, I have had many tests run on me by the Gastroenterologists. I never could get an answer as to why I had acid reflux. I was simply told to keep taking the proton pump inhibitors. If you are suffering from acid reflux,
do yourself a favor and get this book!

Great job! This book is a wonderful insight of how to best support teachers and students about inclusion in a manner that allows all students to LIVE life whether on the Autism Spectrum or not. Paula shares a lot of personal lessons she has learned through her years of researching what is best for one may not be best for all. Learning how to best address the unique talents and challenges of students with Austism is a continued journey and I look forward to future books from this author. The humor throughout the book just adds to the enjoyment. Strongly recommended! A must read for the entire school staff.

You sure are going to love this kid!

As an elementary teacher and a mother of a child with an autism spectrum disorder, I found this book to be one of the most practical yet thought-provoking texts I've read yet. Ms. Kluth gets right to the heart and mindset of what true inclusion is. Her ability to inspire us all to value the child with special needs as well as to respect and value the input of caregivers is crucial to successful inclusive schooling. In addition, this book has really helped me to keep an open mind about how every child, regardless of the severity of his disability, can and must play a key role in the success of any classroom community. Most importantly, Ms. Kluth addresses the importance of positive attitudes, perseverence and personal reflection in one's own growth experiences as an educator. It was great to read this book. Thanks for the wonderful anecdotes that so vividly helped me visualize how I can create a more effective inclusive environment in my classroom. Can't wait!

I LOVE the chapters on teaching strategies and behavior. Lots of great tips for helping challenging kids. The teaching strategies chapter has ideas for getting ready for transitions, preparing the classroom, and teaching lessons effectively. The planning-in-reverse strategy is really effective!

Brilliant, eloquent, and helpful, this book is not only eye opening, but gives a clear grasp and understanding to the broad spectrum Autism occupies. Dr. Kluth's book clearly explains the way parents and teachers can impact children not only at home, but in an inclusive classroom.

"You re" Going to Love this Kid" is written in a clear, no non-sense style capturing the unique challenges that can occur between school systems, teachers, parents and the special child with autism. Dr. Kluth brilliantly gives examples and steps to help overcome the obstacles so many parents face with educational professionals who may be ignorant or unaware of the promising and doable outlook of inclusive teaching.

Dr. Kluth's book is not only creative, but easy to follow and useful. It is information on routines and other helpful ideas and all done in an easy to follow creative way. This book is inspiring and touching with the many stories she includes from actual students.

I borrow Dr. Kluth's book out regularly and strongly encourage teachers, administrators and parents to attend Dr. Kluth's seminars regarding inclusive teaching and understanding autism.

I bought this book based on the positive feedback of other reviewers. I don't generally eat many sweets, but I was desperate for something to make for special occasions, since traditional, wheat-based cakes and cookies were definitely not an option.

I first made the "Orange Pecan Streusel Muffins". I had to order some of the specialty starches and flours from companies on-line before I could begin this recipe, as they are not available in my area. Once I had all the ingredients, the recipe was easy to follow, although fairly time-consuming. I substituted chestnut flour for the pecan flour. And the muffins were delicious! You would never know they were gluten-free. My husband, who is not gluten-intolerant, polished off two of them immediately. The recipe says to let the muffins cool before eating, but you can eat them a little warm if you like. yum.

I'm looking forward to trying some of the other recipes. This is a GOOD cookbook!

Being newly diagnosed as celiac I can say it is very confusing and reading lables is a time consuming job BUT in this book they list brand names of products that are normally glute/wheat free such as condiments and such. I still read labels, but with the help of the brand name references it helps to point me in the right direction. Easy to follow recipes even for the beginner.

My daughter purchased this book through an advertisement in a magazine she received - paid $41.00 including postage. She told me about it and I immediately went to Amazon.com to see if I could get it at a better price. Sure enough - had a choice of new or used - I purchased a new copy of the paperback version for $21.00 total. Half Price with the Same Good Advice!

There was some useful information mixed in with some of the author's "opinions".
A lot of the information was facts that I've heard before and/or already knew about. But, it's nice to have a reference on hand instead of relying on memory. I didn't actually find any "amazing cures" - just some options in treatment.
What works for some doesn't necessarily work for others - but you can
always try to help yourself.
