I found this book after a referal from a lactation consultant after my third baby was born and in the nicu. I had low milk supply issues with each baby but it was worse after my baby was in the nicu. This book offers help that seems to be hard to find from doctors and the medical proffession at large. At the very least it explains things in a way that you can finally understand what is going on, rather being told some bland explanation from a doctor that doesn't offer any help.

I fell in love with this book. I had a lot of trouble breastfeeding my first child and as I was preparing for pregnancy with my second child, I wanted answers. This book explained a lot of the troubles that I personally had. The book is also a good nutrition book, not just for pregnant or nursing mothers, but for anyone. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is looking for nutrition or herbal advise for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

This book is outstanding. I had originally bought "Eat Well, Lose Weight, While Breastfeeding" and was so disappointed, I sent it back to Amazon. Then I found "Mother Food." I can't tell you what a valuable resource this has been for me. It has a very international feel (the author is Swiss) because it references cultures from all over the world and connects you with moms from ever corner of the globe on what works best for producing the highest quality of breastmilk for your baby. The best recipe in the book is for the "green drink." It's a blend of raw fruit and vegetable juices that increases the quantity and quality of your breastmilk amazingly. I make this drink everyday and since then have been able to pump a full 5 oz more milk each day. I have looked and felt so much better since beginning some of the routines described in this book and my baby has been much happier and had hardly any colic! You absolutely MUST buy this book.

After 35 years, finally something that starts to put together some of the pieces. Dean has hit the nail on the head for me, although only about 30% of the book really relates to my experiences. I still need some answers, but now have a better idea of how to find them.

This is one of the finest books written for Vietnam veterans and their families, and I've read many. As a former wife of a Vietnam vet, I know too well the emotional devastation that was visited on those of us who were ill prepared for the return of our loved ones, suffering from psychic war wounds.
This book spells out what PTSD is, in clear, understandable language. How I wish I'd had this book years ago, but I am eternally grateful for Chuck Dean's courage and insight into this subject. He is helping so many of us find a way to put our trauma in perspective, and find meaning in our experience. Thank you, Chuck, for writing this book!!

I am a social worker with the Dept of Veterans Affairs and work closely with many Vietnam vets. This book put their experience in perspective for me. My father is also a Vietnam Vet and I have urged him to read this book. I have read many books on treating PTSD and about the Vietnam War, but this, by far, is the finest book I own regarding both of those topics.

A profound, earnest and helpful book

Review Date: 2005-04-12
Since 1975, nearly three times as many Vietnam veterans have committed suicide than were killed in the war, the divorce rate among Vietnam veterans is above 90 percent, and between 40 and 60 percent of Vietnam combatants have persistent problems related to the war. What is the cause of these terrible statistics, and how can Vietnam veterans cope with flashbacks, depression, fits of rage and worse? Written by a Vietnam veteran, and now in a newly revised and expanded edition, Nam Vet: Making Peace with Your Past is a self-help guide that helps survivors identify the origins of self-destructive behavior with roots in the war, and make lasting peace with the past. Chapters address how to deal with recurring nightmares, survival guilt, PTSD, the dangers of "self-medication" and much more. A profound, earnest and helpful book grounded in realistic appraisal of lasting personal problems relating to the war, strongly recommended for the families of veterans as well as veterans themselves.

I was very impressed by the chapter about physical activities and related effects on health in general.

The author explains in a systematic manner the positive and negative types of physical exercise and training.
I have tremendously enjoyed the therapeutic techniques included in this book, especially those that improve the quality of our health.
As a matter of fact, I began to use some of these techniques, and already I feel much better.

A superb book, and a great health guide.

I'm considered by others to be pretty up (and fairly fanatical) on health issues, though I do go for the occasional bag of chips. This book made me feel like a downright slacker! It also strikes me as being very, well, of the American culture of fear. Everything is terrible and going to kill you. The air you breathe, the chemicals on everything... you should bathe in filtered water?? Come on!

We all know it's not an ideal world, but this book will have anyone taking it too seriously in a real tizzy as you can't do a thing without causing yourself and those you love some grievous bodily harm.

It's interesting, but take it with a grain of salt. Oh wait-- NOT SALT!!

Well written easy read. The ideas of the "Stop walking on eggshell" e.g. "it is not your problem" but explained to the lay man in a practical way. A four stars because in my opinion it is bias to the "leave" scenario: the author solution, but the simple outlines can be reinterpreted to "leave the situation" without getting sucked-in.
For the one that leaves read: "A Promise to Ourselves" of Alec Baldwin: hold tight.
The "One Way Ticket" book will nevertheless give you more than just a glimpse of sanity: thank you Ozzie_Tinman.

This is your ticket to the start of a healed you! Ozzie_Tinman is the best pilot you can have in your journey to recover from the emotional scars caused by being affected by a borderline. Although the writing is hardly academic or professional, you will be given the best advice on how to start your journey to Kansas. Yes, the only way to save yourself is to LEAVE THE BORDERLINE FOR GOOD. Tips to remember:
1.Ozzie_Tinman is a great pilot but YOU have to make all the arrangements for this flight and that includes getting the ticket, the passport and making sure you get a good seat and buckle up (these metaphors will make sense as you read the book).
2. Don't get obsessed with reading about BPD- you don't need to become an expert - you need to heal yourself! I recommend "Boomerang Love" but that's about all you need.
3. LEAVE, LEAVE , LEAVE - Don't assume the borderline will get better- according to the book for a borderline to cure itself it takes at least 4 years to happen and much therapy.
4. Regain your self-esteem as that is what is preventing you from moving on!
5. Kansas is a wonderful place that you have been before (you met the borderline) - you can get back there, difference is that you will be stronger, more beautiful, and much smarter than when you were before the borderline drained your soul!
6. Think positive and don't dwell on then 10% of good times you had with the BPD- those were FAKE attempts made by the BPD to win you over so that the remanding 90% of time you suffered you will long for the good times to come back.

Finally! Some insight on borderline personality disorder...

This book is really written for folks with family and friends who are either diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) or are exhibiting similar symptoms. I have both family and friends who have various psychological disorders including Borderline, Depression, Bipolar, Anxiety, Autism, etc. Information useful to many types of psychological disorders is included in this book. It hits head on a variety of symptoms and how to deal with them. While the focus is on BPD it has lots of how-to information for related or similar disorders.

This is a great book. It's partly about the journey of the author "Ozzie" as he recounts dealing with his borderline wife. It's heartbreaking and encouraging at the same time. Ozzie has had quite a tough time but he's handled it with a grace that I hope I can achieve.

One Way Ticket To Kansas is also about educating us on symptoms, possible responses to behavior, access to support, etc. If you think you have someone near you with BPD you really should read this book. This is this kind of book I'll buy and give away to people needing the help. It's just that good.

Best of the book: Chapter 7 "Ozzie Stinkin' Thinkin'" where Ozzie helps us understand how our own thinking becomes warped. Even better he helps us understand how to modify our thinking to become healthier for us, and at the same time possibly healthier for our loved one with BPD.

Buy it now for immediate insight and support.

I hope you enjoy One Way Ticket To Kansas.

The pouty look on the author's face on the cover of the book should be enough for anyone to know exactly how the book will read.
As a current Hodgkin's patient, I was highly disappointed in Only When I Sleep. I kept reading it only because I wanted to be able to write a review here to counter those that convinced me I should buy the book. I am experiencing how personally devastating cancer can be, however, I am ashamed (and a little bit angry) that people might think that all cancer patients behave like spoiled children, moping around in search of pity and verbally abusing those who love them.
There are certain emotions and ideas about cancer which the author writes about that I do agree with; however, it's mind-boggling why someone would want to actually put their selfish and immature behavior on display like this. Shaw-Brawley wasn't happy unless everyone was coddling her; she had to see everyone cry over her before she was happy. Her poor parents and husband deserve some kind of award for putting up with her--they were probably exhausted by the time her treatments were over. I agree that families experience cancer right along with the patient--there's no denying that--but none should have to suffer like Shaw-Brawley's.
I don't doubt that keeping a journal throughout her ordeal was beneficial and cathartic to Shaw-Brawley, it was not something I feel she should share with the world. In no way am I saying that what she was feeling was wrong or that she should have kept it bottled up...it just wasn't worth publishing. Journals are meant for personal reflection and should be kept in a box in the back of the closet.
I gave the book two stars only because it must have took some kind of gumption to show this side of herself in a book. Do yourself a favor and don't buy this book...neither the writing or the editing is that good anyway.

Lisa is a brave and intelligent person. The words she writes of her cancer experience are from inside her soul, they are real. She dares to speak of her fear. You can hear her fear and her courage to fight fear. She insists on explaining this life changing event. She describes cancer's potential and how paraylzing an experience can be. I myself am a (2) time Hodgkins Disease survivor. I can relate to Lisa in many, many ways. The title, "Only When I Sleep," says it all. I strongly encourage anyone to read this book to hear words of a cancer experience and the meaning of a cancer survivor. Those who have experienced cancer and read this book will applaud Lisa for her strength to overcome adversity and commend her for not letting her experience go unnoticed. That yes, Cancer is life changing, it will try to take you down, but for many not without a fight. With a loving support system, you can overcome.
Thanks Lisa, and happy healthy - life to you and yours.

This is a wonderful book. It will make you cry, but will also bring joy to your heart and a smile to your face. It makes you realize the "choices" Lisa and her family had to make to survive where very hard for her and her family. You will admire her strength, courage, and her determination to beat this. You see first hand how it effects everyone in her family. How the love of her husband, parents, family members and friends are unconditional. It shows us how the small things we all take for granted can be taken away from us in seconds and our world can be turned upside down. How Lisa never gave up and if you "believe" anything is possible.

I highly recommend this book to everyone, not just those dealing with cancer. There is a "lesson" for everyone to learn from Lisa's experience. It's a WONDERFUL story of love, courage, faith and determination of a young woman who is fighting to survive cancer.

The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything"I welcome fun and travel orders from the Cosmic Kitchen..." I love this quote and hundreds of other affirmations and encouragements offered in this book. As a positive psychologist I know the importance of viewing one's future with hope, optimism and even certainty that the right things will happen just for you! My new book, The Truth (I'm a girl, I'm smart and I know everything) is filling girls, tweens, teens and moms with a similar message. Infusing ourselves with our own energy banks of wisdom, ingenuity, courage, and at the same time letting the positive in from the universe is a simple recipe but not so simple to process and 'cook.' That's why I'm so happy that Dr.Crane found so many ways via stories, affirmations, and wisdom to help people learn to 'cook' up the lives they deserve to live. Yes, I'll have another helping! Dr. Crane has written a wonderful how-to book for those of us who can get bogged down along the Cosmic Highway. Not everyone is instantly successful with the philosophies and techniques of the Nevilles and Joseph Murphies. Making it all work can be a little more complex than they and their followers let on in the success stories found in their books. Well, thanks to Dr. Crane's explanations, lights begin to come on and you start to "get it" a little more successfully, thereby no longer feeling like a spiritual dufus. The metaphor of "ordering from the cosmic kitchen" is great and right on the mark: We learn how to choose from our personal menus and (by golly) get what we ordered! This is a very worthy book. It's a great beginner book on this subject and a great helping hand for non-beginners when they find themselves a bit stuck and not knowing why.

This book is so easy to use and easy to read. It uses plain English to explain how to make your Cosmic Order, and also explains what you can do if the Cosmic Chef dishes up a slighly different recipe.
You can read this book in one day, and have your orders written up and sent off in the same day.
This works...be careful what you wish for!

The Awesome Power of Affirmations Revealed
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-23
Patricia J Crane, has created the best guide on how to achieve any goal using affirmations that I have ever seen.

Patricia has a rare and unique talent of taking abstract ideas and bringing them down to earth so that anyone can use them to get what they want. She illustrates her techniques in clear terms...leaving you with no room for doubt.

As you already know, and most probably heard at some point in your life, that what we feed our minds becomes our reality. We can convince ourselves practically anything with enough verbal repletion of affirmations.

However how many of us actually act upon this? How many of us use this awesome power? And even when we do use this powerful technique, are we using it correctly?

For example if you want to quit your job because you can't stand it anymore, you should not say "I want to quit my job", because that is focusing on the negative. Rather you should state. "I look forward to successfully securing myself a position at another firm, in a job that I love!"

Also another powerful idea that is often overlooked that you got to be patient. As Wayne Dyer teaches: "Infinite patience produces immediate results."

The bottom line is, we can submit any of our heart deepest desires to our Cosmic Chef ("our higher power") and He will process and answer all of our requests.

If you are unhappy with your life (which means your are producing negative results) its because at some level you are feeding this order into the cosmic chef. If your fear of not achieving your goal is greater and your faith of achieving it, then the winner will be the stronger emotion. It's that simple.

I ordered this particular set for a friend who was facing surgery for the very first time in her life. She was extremely apprehensive. The change in her after using these tapes/cassette was remarkable. She was much calmer and has had a fairly comfortable post op recovery.
I still use the relaxation tapes even tho my own cancer surgery was 5 years ago.
I used both these tapes and Bellaruth Naparstek's during chemotherapy! It helped immensely! I find these tapes soothing and a very positive way to bring calm back into your life. I have shared these tapes and books with several people over the past five years.

Regardless of what the last reviewer thinks (how bored is that person anyway?)I have honestly read this book and found it simple, straight forward, and easy to follow. I tried several other books and videos and this was the clearest and least intimidating. People looking for an introduction to Pilates, this is definately the right book for you!!!

This is simply a beautiful book. Much good work has been done to help connect people and plants and we delight in that. Eliot looks beyond the physical plant you see and gifts you with the feeling of connection with Plant Spirits. Thank you Eliot. Many who read this book with an open heart will come through the door you have opened. We are ready to help - ready to heal.

Well written, full of passion and honesty. Cowan takes a leap of faith with courage in hopes that others will learn the connectedness of all, and the simplicity it takes to honor our most prescious resources, "OUR FAMILY". Well worth the read, and please; share it with others!

Plant Spirit Medicine speaks of the elements of nature, the plants, shamanism, and healing. Cowan's integrity, wisdom and humor is apparent throughout. I first read this book 7 years ago. It changed my life, opening me up to a world where healing, love and compassion are always flowing from the plants and other aspects of nature. This book speaks of one man's journey and opens the doors to allow you to make your own journey and find your own path.

This book is an accessible, sincere and inspired guide for anyone who is curious about how to recover the human's innate ability to be in communication with the non-human world - which apparently just awaits our intention to do so. Eliot Cowan shares his own fascinating journey of discovery in a way that also offers to the reader ideas for how to do the same. His message is not, "look at me, I have special abilities," but "look into yourself and see what is there just waiting to be revived." The disastrous psychological, ecological and spiritual situation humans find themselves in as a result of having stopped engaging in "the great conversation" with nature, as author Thomas Berry puts it, can begin to heal if we try hard, now, to apply ourselves to the wisdom available in such books as Plant Spirit Medicine. We have a responsibility to read and utilize such information as Eliot Cowan makes available here. --Tayria Ward, Ph.D.

I have been reading and practicing these medicines for some time. I am also studying ethnobotany and plant medicine in relation to psychopathology. I picked up this book as a supplement to my work, and I did not expect that it would be so good. I would recommend this book to ANY person interested in this subject- whether they are totally new to it, or have been doing it for decades.
Cowan clearly and eloquently provides his take on this subject, and does a very good job explaining the basics. But he writes with a gentle tone, and makes plant spirit medicine something that everyone can do. This book isn't trying to sell anything or promote a workshop or healing modality. This really does provide some genuine insights on how to communicate with plants and use them for healing.
Eliot Cowan is right on with this book. You won't be disappointed.

It is about time a book like this has come along! It is filled with humor, hope and inspiration. In particular, Jana High's story brings home the importance of a good sense of humor in the midst of adversity. I also related a great deal to Julie Burch's story of struggling to be independent and learning to be happy with one's choices. I highly recommend this book for a friend, a co-worker, a relative, or yourself!

A New Cinderella Story

Reviewed by Carolyn Howard-Johnson, award-winning author of This is the Place and Harkening: A Collection of Stories Remembered

Lately we`ve seen lots of movies that trade on a little girl's desire to grow up to be cared for by a handsome prince. That includes The Princess Diaries, Maid in Manhattan and other Cinderella stories that pretend to have an up-to-date twist for the modern woman. We have fashion designers exploiting women's desire for the glass slipper with five inch heels that will trash her posture and disintegrate her spine. Now we have The Princess Principle but it is not part of a trend toward exploitation.

Instead it is full of essays by eighteen women who share their hope, joy and expertise. The title may attract the very woman who needs it. It is an authentic inducement because our culture has made the idea of being a princess a part of our psyches that we might as well turn to our advantage.

The editors, Jana L. High and Marilyn Sprague-Smith, M. Ed., have assembled literate, well educated women with different stories and different angles on how we might improve ourselves and still live with-even accept-what now may appear to be our natural urge to be a princess. For these women, The Princess Principle isn't about being rescued; they know we are beautiful and important in the ways that count.

As a writer considering my own anthology I must also comment on the format of this book. It is rare among anthologies. It gives each contributor full and complete billing including her name on the front cover, her picture on the back. It is also careful to credential each author so the reader has a sense for who each of them is and how she might best approach that writer's views.

This book might even be a resource for readers because some of the authors act as coaches, therapists, or advisors in real life.

In the spirit of this exceptional format here are the contributors:

Lorri Allen
Sue Bergstrom M.Ed.
Julie D. Burch

Jennifer Curtet
Deb Gauldin, RN
Sheryl Rudd Kuhn, MRR
Carolyn L. Larkin
Janet Luongo, M.S.Ed.
Joyce C. Mils, Ph.D.
Rebecca Pace
Lori Palm
Vickie Pokaluk
Valerie A Rawls
Sheryl Roush
Sue Stanek, Ph.D.
Amy S. Tolbert, Ph.D.

My bet is that not one of these women is a princess in the traditional sense and that every one of them is a princess in the sense she is making her own way, happily and with self assurance, in this big, bad but wonderful world.

(Carolyn Howard-Johnson's first novel, This is the Place, has won eight awards. Her newly released Harkening: A Collection of Stories Remember has won three. Her new book of poetry , Skyscapes: A Woman's View,is looking for a home.)

I was looking for a new book to give to my wife whom was down in spirit as our oldest left home after graduation. Well, I was impressed with this book by Jana High and Marilyn Sprague-Smith.
I read it too, on advice from my better half. The Princess Principle is a fresh interpretation on understanding and listening to one's own values, personal worth and self esteem system. The authors left me with clues and guidance on how to stay on top of the everyday life journey and how to place the bigger picture in daily focus through the road hazards ahead. I normally read astronomy and other science books but this was a great change for me.

This book offers compelling insights that encourage you to see yourself in the very best light. What's more is that it awakens the awareness that each person deserves to be treated royally. Of course, that is not about being pampered and pandered to, but rather, to live, work and love in the world in ways that demonstrate your respect, caring and competence!

Give this book to every woman you know. This is an excellent book to give to young women as well.
