This is an amzaing manuscript. By leading the reader through the key discoveries in modern molecular oncology , Weinberg is able to elucidate the hallmarks of carginogenesis in simple, yet comprehensive ways.
This is a must read for any doctoral student. However, Weinberg simple and entertaining language will be enjoyed by anybody who has an interest in the pathways that lead to cancer.

History of cancer theories for the layperson

Here's a book that I would recommend to those people interested in learning a bit about the beginnings of cancer. In One Renegade Cell, Robert Weinberg has written an informative narrative on the history of cancer and molecular biology research, focusing on the theories and evidence behind the early days of this field: the 1970's and 80's.

Weinberg's focus is on what he knows best: the mechanisms that promote and regulate the proliferation of normal and malignant cells. And for that, his explanations are the best out there. These explanations take up the first half of the book, corresponds to the early events in the development of a tumor, and makes up a coherent story. For example, he covers oncogenes, tumor suppressors, apoptosis, and to a lesser extent DNA repair, in relatively easy-to-follow language.

In the second half of the book, Weinberg refers to other aspects of cancer progression, more reflective of the later stages of cancer - angiogenesis, immune evasion and metastasis. He essentially provides the highlight reel for these aspects of cancer, and I felt that the transitions to such topics could have used some work. But that's okay in my opinion, because Weinberg comes right out and says it on the cover - this book is specifically about *the beginning* of cancer, first and foremost.

Weinberg also avoids using overwhelmingly long lists of references that are typical of more scientific writing, as well as skipping over the many highly-technical details that are involved in actually conducting such research, making it more accessible to non-experts. Indeed, he defines every term in a way that probably only requires a minimal background in biology to understand.

Must have: great intro and overview of current research

No prior knowledge of cell biology or genetics is required. I have gained an appreciation for the complexity of cancer research thanks to the book. I highly recommend it. You also learn a fair amount of the history of the development of cancer research. And don't think you need to read through hundreds of introductory pages to accomplish this. The book is under 200 pages.

Once again: What I found great about the book is it explains very clearly the current thories on how cancer starts and spreads without requiring any prior knowledge in the field.

For the scientifically oriented who are interested in the details, it has a big reference and endnote section. 5 stars for sure.

Valuable information!

Extremely informative, written in interesting form like a scientific novel, a systematic mini-survey of the molecular biology of cancer. Takes you through 30 years of discovery, explaining how false expectations were replaced by the discovery in laboratories of right pathways. Among the useful pieces of information you'll pick up: cancer cells are not destroyed by chemo and radiation, only some DNA damage occurs. Unless the p53 gene is little enough damaged, then the tumor is not stopped, and Weinberg explains why. He fully describes the 6 mutations that are required, over time, to produce a metastasizing tumor. My wish: that Weinberg would next write a book about cancer treatments.

I end with an aside for those who are in love with the red herring called "holism", and imagine that "reductionism" is dead and of little or no use in the elucidation of complexity. The entire field of genetic and cancer discoveries, all of microbiology, is nothing but plain ol' reductionism applied to very long molecules, molecules so long and often disordered in shape that new techniques of chemical analysis had to be invented (like PCR). This book and any standard text on molecular biology provides full evidence for the truth of my assertion.

Excelent entry to cancer biology

There are very few books out that give the reader an overview modern cancer biology. This short book gives a clear picture of a complex and current subject. It uses historical perspective on scientific discovery to enliven the reading. It's well organized and readable without background in biology, but with enough depth to interest biologists in other fields. I also reccomend Robert Weinberg's "Genes and the Biology of Cancer", written with Harold Varmus, which covers the same material in a little more depth.

The Focus is Praying and Walking

Review Date: 2002-02-03
Sometimes we hear someone say something really profound that hits home with us and we think, "I wish I'd said that."

That's exactly how I feel about Prayer Walk--"I wish I had written that."

In the mid 1980's, I lived in Southern California where the temperatures were mild. From about 1984-1986, I got up early six days a week for prayer walking and singing praises to God. Many days it was just me and God. Other times a friend or two would join me.

It was during those years that I looked and felt my best, and felt close to God and in tune with my surroundings.

Now I live in a place where winters have ice storms and summers bring extremely high humidity. I still walk a little in the spring and the fall, but it's just not the same as it was during my prayer walks in California.

Reading PrayerWalk has caused memories to come rushing in about a time when my body and spirit were nourished and healthy.

One of my favorite lines in this book is, "prayer walking is not an easy way to 'take care of prayer' while you get good exercise. It is a call to spend rich time with God, carrying others' loads. The walking is only a means to make it all happen."

Janet Holm McHenry then encourages the reader to pray for your own church, law enforcement, military, public servants, the christian community, business owners, schools, family, friends, and community. McHenry has walked through tears of remorse, tears of joy, tears of suffering, victory, and answered prayer.

She relates the physical benefits of walking as reduced risk of dying prematurely from heart disease or developing diabetes, it helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints, reduces the risk of breast cancer, and combats obesity.

McHenry has convinced me that it's high time for me to get back to prayer walking. The focus here is twofold--praying and walking. This book is definitly motivational. I am now motivated to becoming a woman of prayer, strength, and walking.

In this review I've talked about the prayer and the walking, but you'll have to read the book yourself if you want to hear about McHenry's interesting walking and praying escapades.

Written in a very warm and engaging style, the author managed to convince me that I should begin Prayerwalking without making me feel guilty or overwhelmed. Studies show that those who take a spiritual approach to weight loss are the primary group to keep the weight off so this book fits in perfectly with my weight loss goals.

I actually stayed up until 5 a.m. reading this book, although I don't recommend doing that, I highly recommend this book. I had never thought of combining exercise (walking) with spending time in prayer/with God. Walking outdoors has always felt like a spiritual experience to me, but I never thought of how many prayers I could be sending out on my journey. This book is not only a book on prayer, but gives excellent advice on walking for health as well. Including statistics, shoe recommendations etc. The authors writing style was so inspiring that I can't wait to start walking again after a long abscense, and experiencing my walking in a new way, time with God. What a wonderful combination!!

My wife speaks English as a second language. I bought this book in English based on references from several friends who are first time child bearers. They spoke highly of it for good reason. It has everything you could ask for about childbirth in an easy to read format, plus the index allows you to hunt for items of interest without reading the entire book. I would recommend it to you regardless of the language you prefer.

Qué Se Puede Esperar Cuando Se Está Esperando: (What to Expect When You're Expecting, 3rd Edition)

This book is a must for the future parents, especially the mother, and it is in both English and Spanish; my wife has been reading the Spanish version and she has been learning and preparing herself for her pregnancy with confidence, since she reads one week ahead of what her situation is going to be and what challenges she has to prepare as the weeks keep adding up and the baby keeps growing.

I will recommend this book to both the future parents, the father can understand all the symptoms that the future mother will go thru week after week and also, he can aleviate her situation by assisting and by providing moral support.

This book should be read by all Magi, Spiritual Mystic, Clergy, Body/Mind Therapist, and anyone seeking truth. Dr. Modi has brought to the Light those things that you find yourself asking, "Why is this happening to me?" Those Thoughts, Feelings, and Physical problems that come to us, starting not from ourselves but from (Eph 6:12) Principalities and Powers that are (to many) not seen.
Discover for yourself and those that you love, the many Unsuspected root causes of Mental and Physical Illnesses.
There is a Prayer of Protection in this book that I use everyday now that is worth 10x the amount you would pay for this book.

Several of Sun Tzu's Strategies come to mind for having this book read and studied by you.

* Laying Plans--- explores the five key elements that define competitive position (mission, climate, ground, leadership, and methods) and how to evaluate your competitive strengths against your competition.

* Maneuvering--- explains the dangers of direct conflict and how to win those confrontations when they are forced upon you.

* Variation in Tactics focuses on the need for flexibility in your responses. It explains how to respond to shifting circumstances successfully.

Dr. Modi's book follows in the footsteps of Dr. Fiore, Dr. Baldwin, Dr. Ireland-Frey and others into the area of attachments and how they affect a person's life negatively, especially when it is mis-diagnosed as just a simple disease or sympton of an illness. She also writes about soul fragmentation, which according to her can happen from even too much compassion or happiness, not just a traumatic event. I found the majority of book very interesting, however I found that in many instances it was repetitive especially with the long summaries at the end of each chapter. Also it was extremely judeo-christian in perspective in regards to satan and demons, etc, even though she claims that she receives the same feedback from patients from different cultural backgrounds. Contrary to the findings of the earlier practioners mentioned before which rarely came across non-human entities, according to Dr. Modi they are just as numerous or even more so then human entities.

Healing for a New Age of Civilization

There is no other way to describe Remarkable Healings by Dr. S. Modi than to say it is completely extraordinary, and that it is a timely gift of great insight into the nature of the human mind and spirit. It is a book that should be read by, not just doctors or psychitrists or age-regression therapists, but by all human beings.

Dr. Modi is a woman of genuine pioneering spirit who, though having acquired all the conventional credentials as a psychiatrist, was dissatisfied with the meager results of traditional talk therapy and decided to employ hypnotherapy to gain more direct access to a patient's subconscious. In this process, she happened to discover that hypnotized patients would begin spontaneously describing what they believed to be their own "past lives," in which they had experienced various traumas that seemed to be causing the debilitating symptoms and illnesses the patients were trying to cope with in their present lives. By addressing these past-life traumas apparently surfacing from some part of the patient's subconscious mind, Dr. Modi discovered that she could effect remarkable, almost total cures for her patients within very brief periods.

Dr. Modi avers that she does not know if these past lives reported by patients are real and that she herself has no belief in reincarnation, but she does believe that the therapy is very important because it yields extraordinary cures that have lasted many years for many patients.

As she continued to work with hypnotherapy, she discovered that her patients started spontaneously describing that other deceased people were living inside them, that is, that spirits of other people (e.g., relatives, ancestors, friends, strangers, etc.) were somehow indwelling them. And this became perhaps the major focus of Dr. Modi's work--i.e., working with earthbound spirits who, for reasons of either obsessive affection or otherwise vengeful resentment and hatred, had become trapped/embedded within the patient's body, --and, further into this research, working with "demon" spirits who explained (through the patient) that they existed under the direct thrall of Satan and were assigned to carry out Satan's instructions, both directly and via other earthbound spirits, to make each patient as miserable as possible.

Consider the following paragraph from p. 196 of her book:

"My [hypnotized] patients describe having from one to as many as ten or even more--sometimes even hundreds--of earthbound entities in different parts of their bodies. One patient, as he looked inside himself, described seeing hundreds of human spirits. It looked like a "beehive" to him. Even when I work with so-called normal people, almost all of them find one or more human spirits inside them, even though they did not have any obvious physical or emotional problems."

What is further fascinating here is that Dr. Modi's patients describe, as the therapy progresses, that the liberation of the earthbound spirits is not that of being "cast out" into some nether darkness, but one where angels are summoned who escort these spirits out of the patient's body away into higher realms of the spirit world where they can undergo healing.

What is especially remarkable in all of these patient descriptions of indwelling earthbound spirits and angelic beings that could be summoned to deal with these fixated spirits is that the patient descriptions were basically identical, regardless of their diverse cultural, racial, religious, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds. Skeptics may criticize that these results are probably due to some sort of "confabulation" or other idiosyncratic artifact of hypnosis, but it is clear from Dr. Modi's writings that such criticisms do not apply at all.

Make no mistake--other noteworthy writers/practitioners have addressed similar realities regarding earthbound spirits, e.g., Emanuel Swedenborg in The Universal Human, Carl Wickland in Thirty Years Among the Dead, Edith Fiore in The Unquiet Dead, and, most recently, Unificationist shamanic healer Daemonim. But Dr. Modi has given us a remarkable, profound and stunning written record of research into the revolutionary healing possible through Spirit Releasement Therapy. Her book characterizes a critical aspect of the vision that will be required to usher in a new age of civilization in the 21st century.

Just finished reading Dr. Modi's Remarkable Healings, and it is right on the money. I have worked in the deliverance ministry and we also dealt with these entities that she describes, yet we were not using hypnotherapy to dig for deeper answers -- we just identified the entities and took them to the Light. It was interesting to learn more about what they can and can't do. I have no fear of them as their only weapons are fear and deception... if you bring the Light down on them, they surrender.

Which brings me to ask the question: Why do Catholic priests in their exorcisms mess around for days and weeks trying to expel these entities, when it can be done in 5 minutes -- in Jesus' name? I know because we did it.

Lastly, her info on soul fragments is very informative. A lot of good down to earth practical knowledge in the book.I'd also like to recommend the recent related book by Dr Lerma Into the Light -- it will surprise you to find out that the angels of Light and the angels of Darkness often work together. And the dark ones are subservient to the angels of Light.

And from what I saw on the references to Dr. Michael Newton's books, several people were upset with Dr. Modi's book, pooh-poohed it, and recommended Dr. Newton's instead. Forget it. He never protects his patients, and his questions lead the subject into conclusions... very unprofessional and thus not very trustworthy. Stay with Dr. Modi.

If I could only keep one book in my library on this subject, I would keep Remarkable Healings. Everone should read this book, because much of the information I feel pertains to all. I certainly can relate to so many things that Dr. Modi writes about, and have passed this information on to my psychiatrist. At one time in my therapy,my doctor called Dr. Modi, and she was very helpful. Because I am an HSP (Highly Sensitive Person)
I now can convince other people that I am not crazy, just psychic. Of course it doesn't matter to me anymore what other people think, because now I have the answers to all my questions. God Bless Dr. Modi.

There are two types of people who will want to read this book: those who like adventure and those who want to see if EMS is for them. Peter Canning is a real-life paramedic in Hartford,
Connecticut, who once worked as a speech writer for former Governor Lowell Weicker. Both of Canning's books are full to bursting with real-life adventure. EMS crews in Hartford have little down time as they go from heart attack patient to auto wreck to infant not breathing to drug overdose. Canning takes his readers along through adventure after adventure at a dizzying pace.

At the same time, Canning shows some of the toll that EMS work takes on the people who do it. In his first book, Canning makes the job switch to EMS. His progression is the usual one from someone who is thrilled with the excitement of the work to someone who wants to earn the respect of his peers to someone who realizes that it's the patient that counts. In _Rescue 471_ Canning has become a well experienced paramedic.

But there are still struggles. Canning works his way through the times when EMS made the transition from a health need to a business dealing in medicine. His smaller EMS company is bought out by a larger one. There are new regulations promulgated by unknown faces. There's the worry about pay and jobs though one of Canning's friends reminds him that EMS companies still need "meat on the seat." Canning also works his way through the worker burnout caused by the long hours of work and dealing with stressful situations. One night Canning just doesn't care anymore. As he drives home, he speeds through the red traffic signals and arrives at his home breathless. I have to commend him for admitting how close he came to losing it.

EMS work in my part of the country is different yet so much alike. The hours are long. A shift is 24 hours on and 48 hours off. The pay is lousy. The only way that the guys make a living is by going from one shift to the next. One medic once told me he had not been home for 11 days. That was after he told me he was trying to leave EMS for nursing. Most of the smaller EMS companies in this area are now gone. Larger companies have taken over the rural areas and even some of the larger cities. This has lead to a demand for medics with techs being told that they need not apply for a job. So two years of schooling (some less, some more) is required to get a job in EMS. And I know of some areas where the EMS guys are getting burnout in about three years. Oh, and did I say the pay is lousy?

To medic or not to medic. Canning worked his way through his burnout. And me? I still have my National EMS Registration and am proud of it.

I've recently had the opportunity to read "The Senior Solution" by Valerie Van Booven-Whitsell, RN, BSN, PGCM. This book looks at the issues faced by seniors and their adult children, it covers all aspects of challenges that seniors face and gives clear, concise workable answers to them. This is a book whose cost is a worthwhile investment for seniors and their families as well as the advisors that work in the senior marketplace.

Having seen four of my family members, including both sets of parents and in-law parents who have needed special care and attention during periods of aging, disability and dying, I had to learn by trial and error. Unfortunately, many times it was by error.

Valerie has clearly and concisely covered a very difficult subject in a very easy to read, relatively short book. She is to be commended for including such areas as VA Home Aid and Attendant Services Grants. I had never heard about them before. She also establishes reverse mortgages as a viable way of handling financial needs for seniors aged 62 and over. At the end of the book is a very comprehensive reference guide to several outstanding websites.

All in all, this book is outstanding....especially as more and more people are aging and joining the "sandwich generation"!

I just started getting into barbell training when I read this book on the advice of my trainer. The book is very dense with critically needed information on correct lifting techniques. Rippetoe is refreshingly humorous and entertaining in his writing style, while staying on-subject. I'm a slow reader, and I finished this book very quickly because it was such a fun read.

Very Entertaining

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Mr. Rippetoe is very straight forward and knowledgeable. His words are a result of thinking of many years in the gym. Reading his choice of quotes is worth the purchase of this book.

Do you to want to -maybe- get strong as a side effect of bodybuilding, or do you want to -get- strong? This is the program for getting strong. Genetic pre-dispositon, sport-specific skill training, & dietary manipulation will deterine whether you are a football lineman or Mr America, but this is the program either way, at least for now,(thus the 'Starting' part of the title).

This book contains great information, is motivational and---with a dry wit that clearly comes from much experience---very funny in places. The style is direct, practical, and easy to read. There is stuff in here that is pretty technical, but also very useful, like the extended analysis of deadlift form, and there is also a lot of philosophy. You'll find yourself reading this stuff and then wanting to head to the gym to try it out.

With this book, plus Starting Strength, you'll be prepared mentally and physically to use strength training just to be strong, to help in whatever sport you do and to make your life better.

Finally, this book has some utterly hilarious comments about cyclists and strength training. As a road biker, I agree that the cycling community as a whole just doesn't get why strength training matters. However, after starting to lift at age 52 (and never touched a barbell before) I definitely get it. The cycling improvements are obvious and it works -exactly- as described in this book: You can ride harder, longer because you're working at a lower percentage of your total strength.

You also have less fatigue on the bike because every muscle in your body has been strengthened so that holding a cycling position is easier. Training time is greatly reduced because 30 minutes of lifting is FAR more effective than 30 minutes of cycling. You still have to build base miles, but the requirement is greatly reduced, leading to a more efficient training schedule.

The best written medical book around. Not only is it written so that the layman can understand it, but it is written with a humorous slant that makes the reader want to keep turning the pages. Pay attention to what this book is telling you and you'll be around for a lot more years. Thanks for writing a medical book that is understandable and with down to earth common sense.Stupid Reasons People Die, An Ingenious Plot For Defusing Deadly Diseases

This book is written with the patient / health-consumer in mind. Finally giving us straightforward answers to how we CAN take care of our health and take our care into our own hands by being informed. Letting patients know that THEY have the right to ask questions, demand respect. The cattle auction speed at which the public is pushed through their medical visits makes you feel like your worry doesn't matter, so you get tired of the cycle and end up never going back to a doctor, which can lead to devastating results. The book is great in its serious humor, a tell it like it is approach. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to prevent those serious illnesses that kill...which would be most everyone. I have passed mine along to all my family members to read. I'm not selling it though, I'm keeping it to check in once in awhile as a reminder!

How refreshing to read the words of a true professional who really cares about people! His patients are so lucky to have him as their physician. Dr. Corso's approach in presenting medical information in a very people friendly manner, allows everyone to truly become educated on these medical issues. His humor clearly comes through as you read the book. I recommend this book to anyone who really wants to help themselves live full and healthy lives.

Medical doctor John Corso puts his twenty years of professional experience to paper in Stupid Reasons People Die: An Ingenious Plot for Defusing Deadly Diseases, a thorough condemnation of the modern healthcare system's erosion of the quality, time, and rewards of medical practice. Chapters discuss how to avoid becoming a hostage of the insurance industry, a logically critical perspective of "all natural" treatments, advice for protecting oneself or spotting the warning signs of diseases that can be prevented or successfully treated, and much more. Specific common killers that are easily prevented, detected early, or treated, include brittle bones (especially in women), sleep apnea, and many cancers from colon cancer to prostate cancer, breast cancer, and others. A solidly practical, no-nonsense guide to avoiding senseless disease or medicine-related death in one's prime. Stupid Reasons People Die carries the highest possible recommendation, as reading it just might save one's life.

Dr. Corso's does 3 things well in his book. He describes complex medical conditions in a straightforward manner with simple language. He explains how the relationship between patients, doctors, and their health insurers has become warped. Finally, he provides a strategy that we can all use to take control of our health care and make informed decisions to maximize our health. This is a good read for someone who wants to make sense of how to be proactive in health care.

I picked this book up out of curiosity. I was not prepared for what I read. I wish I had never opened the book. If you get the least bit emotional hearing or reading about child abuse then don't read this book because the details of what this poor child endured - the torture, mental, physical, sexual abuse - are in the book. I fear these images will stay in my head for years to come. (I think Ms. Spencer did an excellent job in the way she presented the story to us regardless of its details). Like a previous reviewer, I too could not put it down because I had to see and believe that Jenny would overcome her horrors and be saved. Unfortunately the book ended before her therapy did so eventhough Jenny made great strides, in the end the readers don't really know if she improved or regressed.

I found this book on my dusty bookshelf and saw I must've started it a long time ago so I decided to try again. Just into the first few pages I realized why i might have put it down. But I continued to read and was instantly brought to tears of the horrific tortures this poor girl went through and the amazing capabilities she had to be able to cope. I was comletely baffled by how this child was able to endure and survive such torment and abuse from her mother, the cult, and numerous men. Though it made me sick, I just couldn't put it down. I had to reach the end to see the amazing outcome of this now grown woman. It was difficult to read but rewarding in the end knowing what those therapists were able to unveil.

Most books leave the reader with a longing for more extensive knowledge of the healing process. Not this one. Judith Spencer does an excellent job of taking the reader from discovery of the abuse, denial, DID effects, and therapy. The details of the abuse can be triggering but also affirming if there are any doubts about the memories of Ritual Abuse. The long search for adequate help within the counseling community was down right disturbing as she was misdiagnosed over and over again. The most informative part of this book is the intimate detail of the therapy relationship and process. Her therapists were absolutely commited beyond the norm to her emotional health. READER BEWARE: don't expect to find similar therapists, they probably don't exist. My only disappointment was the lack of information about the relationship with her husband. As a primary relationship, it was certainly overlooked or intentionally avoided.

This book is amazing. It captivates the reality of child abuse dangers as well as the monstrousity of satanic cults. If this book were a movie, it would make "Sybil" and "The Three Faces of Eve" look like disney shows. It is a psychology course must-read, but I read it simply for its intriguing truth and complexity.

Feels like I wrote parts of it. very scary and triggering . Read with care and if you have a past in satanic abuse, don't read it at all.
