On a quest to lose a hundred pounds after breaking a tendon in my foot, I am scrambling for inspiration, and this isn't it. More like a good talk over coffee, it may work for some, but not for me. Try the Amazing Disappearing Critic.

Who ever heard of a diet book that you couldn't put down and had you laughing out loud ala Bridget Jones and Stephanie Plum? Think Ya-Yas go on a diet. 3fc's is full of great info on everything from Atkins to Zone and written by real people who have gone through it all. I borrowed it from the library and am ordering one for myself and another for my daughter. Three cheers for the original three fat chicks, the Barnett sisters. Hip, hip, hooray!!!

Ever wonder why one plan works great for someone but not for you? And once you get started on something and you can't figure out how to fit all the pieces together and need some help, where do you go? This book. It has it all. It's plain to see that the three sisters have seen it all and done it all, and their community members have as well. There's a huge amount of useful information, lots of humor, and it's all honest. No holds barred.

Dieting is hard work, and keeping it off is even harder. 3 fat chicks know the struggle and share it with everyone they touch.

Hilarious, Down-to-Earth and Helpful.

We've seen the television ads, but which weight loss program is for you? These former "fat" chicks, of the well-known Web site, have got the skinny.

Whether Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, South Beach or surgery, their book reveals all, providing detailed analyses, pros and cons and participant comments about cost, commitment and outcomes. Hilarious, down-to-earth and very, very helpful.

Well done; Thumbs Up

After providing free recipes and encouragement for years via their website, I am delighted to see that these sisters published their own book. It's a good comparison of the variety of weight loss plans being marketed today. The book has a good amount of motivational material also.

I came across this book while breastfeeding my third child and I wish I had found it sooner! The real life examples make moms realize that they are not alone in any problem they might experience. There's also a lot of practical advice, including how to deal with hospital staff, doctors, and family and friends who might not be completely supportive of nursing.
This will definitely be on my gift list for new moms-to-be!

"THE ABC'S OF BREASTFEDING" by Stacey H. Rubin is a MUST READ for any woman planning to breastfeed her first baby or her last. The unique approach in which Ms Rubin tells of her personal experiences as a Mom, a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and a Lactation Consultant, is informative, educational and truly fun to read. As a Neonatal RN, I have come away with an expanded knowledge base that I can use on a daily basis with the parents and babies I care for in the NICU.

A Wonderful Book!

I read this book cover to cover when I was about 3 months pregnant. I had many worries being this was my first pregnancy. I had many questions about breastfeeding and I also had some concerns about the birth itself and the hospital experience. This book covered all my questions regarding breastfeeding and had many important tips. The layout of the book is extremely user-friendly and the text is intriguing and informative all at once. Also, I was pleasantly surprised to find a lot of information in this book about having a fulfilling birth experience. My pregnancy has its share of complications but this book gave me the confidence to ask the right questions and the knowledge to know what to request to make this birth a positive experience for me and my baby. I actually switched to a baby-friendly hospital at 20 weeks after finding that their standard care lines up perfectly with the ideas that Stacy Rubin recommends for developing a positive breastfeeding experience. I would never have known what to ask for or what was important if I didn't have this handy resource to rely upon. If you are breastfeeding or considering breastfeeding, get this book! It is a must-have! Better yet - it makes a wonderful gift to any expectant mom.

This book is great for women who are serious breastfeeders. Most books on breastfeeding are so basic that they're useless once you're really into breastfeeding. This book has substance to it;I'm breastfeeding my second child and I can still refer to it without feeling that my intelligence is insulted.Sometimes it's nice to have a more medical-based explanation, and this book gives that as well as the easier-to-understand version. The scenarios are realistic, too, and Stacey Rubin's remedies are as well. A useful tool for breastfeeding moms!

Puja Thomson writes with depth and authority about one of the most terrifying experiences a woman can face. She draws from her own bout with cancer and her history as a healthcare provider, to create an indispensible guide to understanding all aspects of this disease including traditional and non-traditional treatments, insights into patient's rights, and information on what to expect and what to demand from others involved in the healing process. Had "After Shock: From Cancer Diagnosis to Healing" been written several years ago, two of my own family members might be alive today to be praising this book as I am.

What makes this book so incredibly unique is that it is not only a wealth of vital information, which would be valuable on its own. Puja Thomson looks beyond the medical into the personal chasm created when a diagnosis of cancer occurs. Sometimes the hole in our wellbeing is pre-existing, and so cancer healing needs to happen at the soul level as well as the cellular level. Readers experienced in holistic living practices will find as much to anchor them in this process as those who are only just learning about the mind-body connection to health and wellness. Thomson empowers readers to create their own wellness program by incorporating relaxation and meditation techniques, creating a meaningful atmosphere, finding certain imagery to stimulate healing and powerful moods, and, perhaps most importantly, by cultivating a deep soul connection to health, mindfulness, and spirituality.

"Puja's book was a great help to a friend of mine who was diagnosed at age 21 with inoperable lung cancer. Her words are wise, and full of wisdom from personal experience with the material covered. Clear, logical reasoning, respect, dignity and compassion run throughout the book.
Puja offers a advice and instructions on how to handle visits and treatments, including questions that should be asked, and information that should be known. Her insight is vast, and her wonderful suggestions can quickly relieve any panic and confusion that occur following such a traumatic diagnosis.
Puja also provides alternative choices to the accepted allopathic offerings, and these too are clearly and concisely discussed.
My mother had passed away 23 years ago, and I wish we had had this resource at that time. No matter what the outcome, Puja's book and the wisdom shared in it will make whatever the timing and path chosen much easier, more productive, and worth living.-Raymundo Rodriguez-Jackson, New Paltz, NY."

A Very Compelling but One-Sided Story
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-04
The plight of the people of Libby and the other sites around the country is very sad and you want to hate WR Grace and the previous mine owners and operators. While their reponsibility is not in doubt, the book could have been improved by more information about what exactly they knew and when. I'm sure Grace et al. did not cooperate with the authors, but the extensive litigation should have made some of this information available.

Who should profit?

Review Date: 2005-06-23
I am in the middle of this book and I find it very compelling. I was interested in customer reviews and when I read the last review on how the story is not yet complete because many of the victims of this scandal do not have health insurance, I felt compelled to write.

Everyone will be making a profit on this story. WB Grace made their money and now the media will make their money. While I agree that the authors have done a wonderful public service uncovering this environmental disaster, I would like to suggest that a substantial amount of the money made on this book (and the perhaps subsequent movie) could be donated to the victims. If not for their illness, there would be no story. I was recently appalled to learn about the monies that were made by media stars on the Watergate scandal while Deep Throat (whoe courage made it all possible) was not doing quite as well. For the media to make money off these stories without providing for the victims is not right either.

Actually, a Real Page-Turner. This book deserves to be read!

I want you to read this book. It is important to you and your family. I consider myself a knowledgeable person and I don't remember this scandal when it came out in 2000-2001. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that I live in southern CA, but the problems with asbestos effects all of us in the US. Attic insulation, talc products and even gardening/soil products have asbestos risks that have been used and available for sale up into the 1990's and beyond.

I must have read a review or heard one of the authors in an interview...but somehow this book made it onto my "Must Read" list. When I received the book, I questioned why I had gotten it, having forgotten what motivated my interest in the first place. But I started reading and have found this book to be a treasure.

The story is one of deception, corruption and greed on the part of Big Business, in this case the mining business. The owners and executives misled their workers, investors and the government agencies that regulated them into turning a blind eye to the dangers of asbestos in their products.

While the deception of the miners in Libby was unconscionable, the book goes on to document the Bush White House withholding information that the air in and around the World Trade Center was not healthy! Can you imagine, after a tragedy like the WTC disaster, that your own government, that you rallied round to give support, would turn on you and withhold information that the air that you breathe is full of cancer causing dust? Which tragedy is worse?

The book is truly a must-read.

Lastly, I want to point out the courage of the reporters, editors, doctors and the outstanding EPA field workers that fought to get this story out. Whistle-blowers, whose main motivation is to right a wrong, are oftentimes rewarded by getting fired and branded as outcasts. This book is ultimately a story of courage and perserverance of those determined to overcome the obstacles of standing out and doing what's right.

A True Account of Lethal Deception for Profit

The author Andrew Schneider tells the story of uncovering a scandal of major proportions. It is a frightening, chilling story of hidden dangers allowed by government officials whose jobs are to keep us safe. It is the story of a mineral still used in our country whose lethal dangers were recorded by Pliny the Elder. Asbestos cannot be safely used in any manner.

Truly shocking! Superbly written!

This book is a masterpiece of investigative journalism - well written, throughly researched and truly in the interests of the public.

The authors do a superb job of combining all the science and politics with a touching picture of the real Americans who ultimately paid and are paying the price for corporate greed and governmental push-overs.

If you read just one book this year, this should be it!

Anyone person suffering these illness, and has struggled with the lack of medical help, NEEDS HOPE. I felt this was truly provided in this book along with the information of Healing. Just reading this book, helped my depression of long term illness that no Dr. could see, touch or give me a Rx for. Getting older or gaining weight, being female did not cause these health problems. Seeing other accounts of similar problems has given me a place to start investigating just what is wrong with my health and so armed with this information, I think can be the first step on the path to wellness.

IT could save your life. Don't believe the naysayers who tell you that nothing can be done. There is plenty that can be done. Not all of it will work, but at least you now have a good place to get started, and techniques that have proven successful for others. Plus the book gives you excellent resources for finding the best doctors out there to get you well. Any questions feel free to contact me at srowe@nbn.net

My boss bought this book for me, and I thought it was going to be just another, "yeah, you have fibromyalgia and it's a real shame, this is how you cope with it", but instead, this book CHANGED MY LIFE! (Sorry for the run-on sentence). I had so much pain that some days I couldn't get out of bed. I would find a position that was minimally pain free and not move until I was better. It got so bad that I had to use a cane so I could get to work. But I read the book and I couldn't believe the case histories. But when the pain got so bad that I thought I would lose my job, I changed my diet (hey, what did I have to lose? ) and low and behold, within a week the pain was gone (I stopped taking pain medicine everyday), the "fog" lifted and I felt better than I had in YEARS! Another side benefit, is that I have lost weight! But I recommend this book very highly. I will also say that my doctors have pooh-poohed these results, but I firmly believe that what we eat, really effects how we feel. I just never knew how much!

You have probably never heard this before, "When I grow up I want to be just like my mother-in-law." I look at her and think, wow, how does she do it? I know this woman; life has not always been easy. She has aged so very gracefully and I just know she is a member of the growing `Amazing Grays' movement that's proving: Maturing women CAN be vibrant, healthy, wise, engaged with life, sexually active, spiritually connected, physically fit and alive well past 100! She, like all of the beautiful women in `Amazing Grays,' makes me now look forward to each birthday. I find myself looking at each woman I see that has made that decision and became a `Silver Sage' wanting to shake their hand and let them know how encouraging they can be to those that will follow. Media and culture has long stressed that women should be young, shapely and such and when you reached a certain point you are moved on into the sub-culture of older-woman. How wrong! Pick up this kickin' guide if you are "Not ready to be a feeble old woman with boobs in your lap, dreams on the shelf, and `Memory Lane' your only destination!"

As Maggie Crane writes, "I decided that rather than succumb to my limiting beliefs and fears about aging, I would challenge them by holding them up to the light of day." Instead of accepting the old adage "just because" she lives life the way she wants to, and by doing so is enabling others to find the strength to give up the "just because" life as well. With humor and grace she will cover social perspectives, "What Aging Means to Us" then jump into physical perspectives, "Becoming Body Wise." By the time you are well into this section there will be no turning back and you will be ready for psychological perspectives, "Discovering what's real." As you come to a close in the final section, spiritual perspectives, "Roots of a Deeper Kind" you will truly be a new woman, a woman who is proud of who you have become and this pride will show in every aspect of your life.

You can read all of the medical books available to prepare you for the transitions life has in store but none will compare to, "Amazing Grays." This information-filled book is so much more than a guide, it lets you know how real women face this experience and ways to better prepare yourself when it is your turn.

Hat's off to you Maggie Rose Crane! I look forward to reaching that age 50 milestone and, with her guide, plan on making the next 50 the BEST 50! I plan on leaving this book on my nightstand and will revisit it often. By mulling over the practical questions and insight Maggie provides throughout "Amazing Grays", I now have a better understanding of what to expect as I age. I intend to embrace my new self and instead of wondering how I will make this midlife transition, I now trust that I can do it with grace, gratitude and gusto!

Balanced somewhere between a memoir and a how-to, this book shares the most poignant insights on what it means to be a woman "of a certain age," and how to chart a graceful course through the physical changes, emotional challenges and mental gauntlet of aging. With honesty, humor and plenty of research, Maggie lights the way for women who want to live with vibrance and joy.

We all have had those days when everything changes, those moments when we realize we've been taken in by the Madison Avenue culture of youth and beauty, and Maggie Crone's was a few years ago while getting her gray hair dyed. BOOM, she suddenly realized that she needed a whole new perspective on being in her 50's and feeling good about it.

Maggie is determined to help us all let go of our previous conditioning and expectations of aging, and create our own experience. Her exciting new book explores and analyzes our culture's social, psychological, and spiritual assumptions about aging in the midst of our youth-obsessed culture, and all from the baby boomer perspective. She looks deeply into how our minds create unrealistic expectations just out of habit, and how important it is that we challenge those false assumptions about ourselves and our aging process.

The name of one of her chapters is: Don't believe everything you think, and it's very true! The thoughts that float around in our heads, and the fears that grow from them, actually have very little basis in reality. They stem from a lifetime of conditioning. We must challenge those beliefs and then carefully and rationally choose another perspective.

If you're ready to change your mind about aging and finally feel good about who you are, read this book![...]

By revealing some of the mystery behind the spirit, mind, body connection (based on her own experiences), the author makes the point that healing from IC involves more than just healing the body. There is much to think about in this book, and it may trigger some healthy self-reflection. For those who believe in God, the references to "God/the Universe" may be unsettling, and are probably made to appeal to a wider audience. But the principles mentioned are universal in nature.

Catherine's story is written from the hand of expertise, as she has had to fight for an answer to her pain and suffering. Catherine's story is one of courage and filled with hope for others who suffer from IC.

As her other two wonderful books, this one also offers you with hope. She writes about how the mind, body, and spirit are connected and how she came to understand how she "drew" IC to her and how she used it to help her heal the rest of the way. I find this book to be comforting and inspirational and greatly recommend it. Once again, thank you Cath for the hope you give us!

This is Catherine Simone's third book describing her battle with Interstitial Cystitis. In this one, she lets her readers know that she is still doing great but addresses spiritual, emotional, and mental issues that can attribute to/stem from the disease. Many people who have recovered are finding that although the physical symptoms are gone, the fear, anxiety, etc., tend to linger. This book perfectly complements her other two, bringing her work full circle. I am so thankful for this book...an excellent resource for every IC patient.

This book was wonderful. Not everything applied to my situtation but it was very helpful in knowing what to expect. There were even some great tips that I shared with my husband. We even had some interesting chats regarding specifics of the book.

My wife and I purchased "Bearing the Big H", at one of Pattis' book signings. I was the first to read it. I was pleasently surprised and read it in a couple of nights. The " big H", is not something a man is normally knowledgeable about but it can drastically affect your relationship with loved ones. Ignorance is defenitely not bliss. My review? I've decided to purchase additional books for my parents(in their 80's), sister, and brother for Christmas gifts. Loved the book Patti!

Wanna laugh?..READ THIS BOOK! Wanna cry?.....READ THIS BOOK!
This author's wit and humor are both hilarious and heart tugging! This is not a medical journal on Hysterectomy, this is a very real and funny account of a very real and funny woman's journey through the BIG H. Laugh at her, laugh at yourself, but READ IT and be encouraged. Honest feelings and earthy humor make this book a delight!

As a retired nurse, I think the vast number of women who undergo removal of their uterus are usually well informed of the surgical procedure, the possible risks, and anatomical changes, but only a rare few are prepared for the hormonal frenzy that follows. Patti Pfeiffer's humorous--and sometimes heartbreaking--account of her surgery and the weeks that followed is a must read, not only for those who have had, or will have, a hysterectomy but for their spouses, too. Even those not involved in this medical dilemma will be amused by Ms. Pfeiffer's journey.

This book was both entertaining and enlightening! I would wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone facing the surgery, or anyone who just wants a good Venus/Mars laugh!

Fantastic Overview!

This is large-size, full color, fabulous introduction to using makeup to enhance the beauty God gave you! First there is a glossary that defines terms you'll hear in describing makeup and glamour. The next 20 pages are "Product Knowledge"... an overview of what the products are, and how to use them: foundation, concealer, powder, eyebrow liners, mascara, eye liners, eye shadows, blush, bronzer, and lip stick and liners. The next chapter discusses applicators and tells you when to use different types of brushes. Chapter five focuses on color choices for foundation, concealer, powder, eye shadow and liner, blush, and lipstick. Next is an overview of the basic face shapes, then how to prepare the face for makeup. Chapter eight digs deeper into using foundation, concealer, and powder to sculpt and mask the face so as to create the illusion of the perfect oval face shape. Chapter nine focuses on eye shapes and the next chapter gives details on scuplting eyebrows, eye shadows and liners, lashes, cheeks, and lips. Throughout there are "before" and "after" pictures.

There are two extra-special features to all the photos: 1) he uses a basic, neutral, color palate for _everyone_ so you can see how the same beautiful and natural shades can be used on everyone. For eyes he uses flesh, beige, gold, taupe, dark taupe, mahogany, golden brown, dark brown, burgundy, and black.
2) As a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant, I love seeing so many National Sales Directors "before" and "after": Arlene Lenarz, Gloria Mayfield-Banks, Sherril Steinman, Sonja Hunter Mason, Karen Piro, Pamela Waldrop Shaw, Jan Harris, Judie McCoy, Lisa Madson, Kathy Helou (and her daughters!), Debi Moore.

A "must-have" for any Mary Kay consultant!

Nice, but.... enough of the trick photography!

Okay, granted, this is probably one of the best books I've seen on make-overs, but once again I am disappointed by the comparison before and after pictures. The techniques presented herein are excellent and do really enhance a woman's beauty, so why resort to the old photographic trickery of presenting horribly exposed and flat "before" pictures to compare against professionaly lighted "after" pictures? As a professional photographer, I want to see a real side-by-side comparison of applied makeup in the SAME lighting conditions. It would be much more helpful.

Again, though, this is still an excellent book.

I actually bought the DVD and the book. Although they are pretty much 1 in the same. The DVD is perfect for "Hands On" learning. However, the book is completely wonderful. The first statement in the book is worth the buy alone. "Embrace your own personal beauty --- love who you are today and everyday". I have been a licenced Cosmetologist, Medical Aesthetician, & Make-Up Artist for over 13 years working in a Plastic Surgeons office in Michigan. I am a forever student of beauty. Robert Jones has wonderful insight to beauty -- Natural is always best. The idea to be who you are, not what is expected by society. I would love to meet Robert Jones to absorb more of his talent. He truely is an artist with the correct mentality. EVERY women is beautiful she just needs to see herself that way. Even flaws can be beautiful.
