I really like this book and find it a great resource. The pictures of each plant are beautiful and the write ups on each essence throrough with indepth discussion. In view of 'heal thyself' that Bach espoused, I found that I was able to confidently chose the remedies I needed using this book. For me, the emotional healing would often begin with reading this book and 'finding myself' written in the pages of a particular remedy. When I start taking the remedy, I regularly read up on my remedy to enhance the healing.

My discovery of Edward Bach's Flower Therapy came on me suddenly. In the midst of writing a novel, my lead character decided to enhance her floral shoppe inventory with self-sewn natural plants and seeds. Within twenty-four hours of beginning my search for herbal practices, I ran into Bach's 38 key plants employed for prevention and cure of a multitude of ailments. This book is a beautiful reference and has been an endless reference for me while developing plant and human characters. I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone who wishes to discover how your personality quirks might be tamed by God's wildflowers.

I am a Reiki person, A massage person, An Herb person, A Gardner, So Bach just seem to be the next natural course of events. This is a good Starter book. It talks about each indiviuial flower. The basics. The foundation. This will be a reference book for the future. I am intending on buying other books about Bach.

This is an excellent companion for anyone who uses bach flower therapy. It is very informative providing in depth information on each flower, history, photos, the negative as well as positive side aspects the particular flower is used for and what I find particularly helpful are the focus ideas at the end of each chapter for refocusing your thoughts. Extensive questionairre, index, glossary.

It may be a bit more than a person needs if you are just curious or have not begun using bach flowers.

Focuses on the brochure issues
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-24
I found this a difficult read. There was never anything to really get excited about and no new amazing insights. It simply repeated the accepted wisdom on Bach flowers. Her description of each flower remedy was a long discussion of the negative state given in the Bach Flower brochure. It's her opinion that it is the separation from the higher self and not listening to your inner voice that causes this negative state.

For instance, when it comes to Chestnut Bud she focuses on the fact that they make repetitive mistakes. Chestnut Bud people have laser like focus, and can obsess on a tiny area of the universe. This makes them brilliant, but they miss many things outside of their field of interest, hence the mistakes. They are like the classic "absent minded professor". They have extreme talent in one area, but very little common sense. Many people with Asperger's will benefit from this remedy.

If you ask a Chestnut Bud if he makes repetitive mistakes, he will answer with an emphatic "No!" because if he makes a mistake in his area of focus, he learns from it, and does not make the same mistake twice. Where he makes repeated mistakes is outside his area of focus, which he doesn't see, and often doesn't care about. But if you ask him "Can you focus intensely on something you're interested in, finding answers that no one else can think of?" He will answer, "Absolutely!" So yes, he makes repeated mistakes, but that's not how you need to approach him. Instead focus on his intelligence and problem solving capabilities, and show him how to balance it.

She is very picky about how many drops to use, what kind of alcohol, and how to drink the water. They are flower remedies. They're an energy medicine. Finding the right remedy is much more important than how many drops to use.

When it comes to selecting the correct remedy she treats it like a homeopathic consultation, with a long interview process, and questionnaires that once again focus on the simplistic negative states given in the brochure. She off handedly dismisses any type of energy testing, saying that people new to Bach Flowers use this approach. I have used Bach Flower remedies for years, and I find energy testing to be quite important. Just because somebody has Asperger's does not mean they need Chestnut Bud. Contrary to popular belief, a flower remedy can be wrong, and can stress a person.

Frequently energy testing will point to a remedy that I dismissed, and when I look at it more closely I think, "Oh, I hadn't thought of it that way." Energy testing has actually taught me more about the remedies because I've learned what types of people can benefit from certain remedies outside of the simple issues in the brochure. It's fun to meet a client for the first time, with basically no knowledge of their personality, and be able to describe their most pressing issue. They say "Wow, how did you know that?" It also increases their faith in your ability to help them.

The focus on the negative aspects also felt over emphasized. Natural leaders will often test for Vine, which does not mean they are tyrants. It means they are natural leaders and it strengthens those qualities.

If you are interested in the Bach Flowers, I recommend Advanced Bach Flower Therapy: A Scientific Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment. I also really like Practical Uses and Applications of the Bach Flower Emotional Remedies.

Ketogenic Diet/Modified Atkins Diet

Review Date: 2008-07-21
First advice--don't try this (or any other type of diet therapy) without consulting the correct professionals--in this case, a neurologist and a registered dietitian. Having said that, my daughter began having severe seizures just before her third birthday. Medications helped marginally. We then started her on the Modified Atkins Diet, a spin-off of the Ketogenic Diet pioneered at Johns Hopkins by the authors of this book. This updated edition contains info about the Modified Atkins Diet. Long story short, my daughter has been seizure free for nearly a year and a half and we are weaning her off her medicine. THIS HAS CHANGED EVERYTHING--for someone with epilepsy, this book is of critical importance as a serious alternative to anti-convulsive medications.

I'm interested in unusual therapies, and know someone who has a child with multiple disabilities including a seizure disorder. I found a videotape about this diet at a rummage sale a few years ago, and while it makes the diet sound relatively simple, this book says otherwise and goes into detail about people who are good candidates for the diet and those who are not. Many testimonials and case studies are presented as well.

The woman I know was given this option and said, "We don't want to starve our child." After reading this book, I can see where she was coming from. The restricted calories don't concern me as much as the fluid restriction, which could potentially be very dangerous and the book addresses this problem as well.

For the proper person, this diet could potentially be a lifesaver and it's worth trying if all factors are appropriate.

Very highly recommended as a top alternative to medication for kids with epilepsy.

If you have or know a child with epilepsy, THE KETOGENIC DIET: A TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN AND OTHERS WITH EPILEPSY is a 'must' for your consideration: it offers a solution beyond medication which provides a doctor-supervised diet high in fat and low in carbs and proteins, which limits calories - and is proven to control seizures. There've been many advances in the field, so this updated 4th edition is essential even for library holdings with prior editions. Besides the latest research, this book includes a new section on the Atkins diet and other alternative nutritional therapies. Very highly recommended as a top alternative to medication for kids with epilepsy.

I received this book, on my birthday, from my mother. She says she picked it up, wrapped it, and presented it to me in front of all my friends, pets, teachers, enemies, monks, lawyers, tubbies, Grandmas, etc. as an "accident." According to mother, she thought it was a used copy of "Teste Stretch-30 days to longer nuts" by Dr. Dinko Plastic-but I'm not sure if either of these books are appropriate B-day presents. As such, this incident has caused many teary, sleepless nights for myself and has strained my relationship with mother to the breaking point. My reputation with colleagues has also suffered irreperable damage, and I am the laughingstock of my local 4-H club. On the other hand, My penis has gotten much more exercised and sleek. So, yeah, thank you mother.

A few weeks back, I purchased Exercising the Penis. And I'm glad I did. I've been interested in penis enlargement for a few years now. Did the exercises, quit, then began again. But Aaron Kemmer's superb book helped me to get a regular routine going to make the maximum gains I can achieve. Exercising the Penis has every thing you need to know about penis enlargement...what exercises you should do. The frequency of your workouts. Information about penis enlargement devices, which ones to use. Any...and I mean any...questions you may have about penis enlargement is in Exercising the Penis. What I like about Exercising the Penis is that penis health is stressed first and foremost...and for guys new at penis enlargement, that is extremely important. Plus, there are success stories at the end of the book. Anything you need to know about penis enlargement, harder, longer lasting erections, stopping premature ejaculations and having multiple orgasms...it's in Exercising the Penis. This book is a must have for penis enlargement. Period.

God Made Me Deficient

Review Date: 2008-05-11
I am not OK the way I am. No, I am NOT. Shut up. I am deficient. God did it on purpose, but this book, thank God, gave me the ammunition to fight back, to fight Him, to put God in his place for this horrible thing he did to me. (And yet I love Him so very, very much.)

From the very first exercise--tie one end of a fishing line to your ding-a-ling, tie the other end to a cinder block, then drop the cinder block off a cliff--my weenus length began to increase exponentially, until, at last, it reached biblical proportions. "If your brother offends thee..." Well, now I have a log to remove from my own eye, and it is my own. Imagine, having to remove your own log from your own eye...! You will weep tears of joy!

Do it--do it NOW. Grow your weenus. Make yourself acceptable in the eyes of God and in the eyes of your brother-man. (Don't worry about the ladies--who cares what they think?) And next time you strut into the local supermarket in the nude, know that you have nothing to be ashamed of... quite the contrary. Because your penis is, in fact, now enormous.

(Added bonus: you will finally achieve that coveted "BOI-YOY-YOING!" sound when you pop a boner.)

Feed Your Need is an excellent book for anyone who wishes to improve their health, and offers particularly useful information for diabetics. Some of the information seems to be the opposite of what we are told by many mainstream "experts". However, I was able to lower my blood sugar levels significantly by following some of the suggestions in this book. Although I still need to take an oral medication to control my diabetes( changes take time to implement and old habits die hard!) this book has made a big difference in my life.

Last year I discovered that I'd developed a severe IgE-mediated tree-nut allergy (and I'm in my mid-20s!) This book helped fill in the blanks of all the questions I didn't get a chance to ask my allergist.

One of the best parts is that the book is written by a peanut allergic allergist, because in a lot of other books you get the sense that the author, even if s/he is a doctor, doesn't really *get* what it's like to actually live with a food allergy.

The book is easy to understand but with plenty of good info and I never got bored or felt like I was being talked down to. I've read a few other food allergy books, but this is the one I usually turn too when I have a question. I only wish I could get everyone I know that doesn't understand cross-contamination to read it!

A requirement for my students! Highly Recommended!

Review Date: 2008-02-06
Author Dennis Lewis has created a masterpiece with "Free Your Breath, Free Your Life". In the society in which we function, everyone seems to forget about the mind, body and spirit, which truly begin with the breath. We could all live a higher quality of life, be healthier and happier if only we'd find a way to relieve the main cause of our negativity. That cause is stress. The best alternative in my mind is to learn how to breathe again, breathing free like when we were babies. Breathing freely allows us to release mental and physical stress. But the key is to find a way to reconnect to that type of breathing.

Luckily for us, Dennis has created a simple roadmap that leads us back to free breathing. What separates this book from the tons of others I've read on breathing is that it doesn't take the same approach for each individual. It presents seven different methods of breathing specifically tailored to the individuals needs and presented in highly detailed and descriptive terms so that there is no confusion to exactly how to apply this process. And the great part is they are simple to perform so they won't feel like you `have' to do them. Once you've mastered these exercises, this method of breathing will become second nature...just like breathing;)

Through these methods, you can easily reconnect to effortless breathing in order to heal the mind and body. Dennis allows us to free our breath so as to infuse our bodies with oxygen to improve overall health and allow us to release stagnant air from the lungs to relieve physical and mental stress (as well as release old emotions I believe) while helping us to open up breathing spaces in our body we were never aware of using a multitude of methods including postures, sounds and physical touch. This is such a simple way to improve the quality of your life. Who wouldn't want such an simple, easy way to have a better quality life?

Free Your Breath, Free Your Life also includes three appendixes giving us further detailed information of important breathing methods such as inhaling through the nose, standing postures and exercises for alleviating pain. If you want to improve your quality of life, begin with the breath and begin with Dennis Lewis.

I am an author of a breathing book myself, which is an exercise system for singers and speakers to improve vocal power. I feel that this book works well with my singing methods because Dennis' books fills in all the gaps I've left out in mine. While I am showing people how to sing better through breathing, he is showing people how to live better through breathing. I am making this book a requisite for all of my students!

Breathing towards a better life

Review Date: 2007-11-29
One of the greatest aspects of Lewis's book is the fact that the author used the word awareness as a key element to improve your breathing. Most techniques used in breathing advise people to learn how to deep breathily without being conscious of what is happening during the process.

Therefore, one can optimize ones breathing by simply paying attention to it. Becoming aware of your breathing and body movement will teach you deep breathing efficiently and naturally.

This book has taught me how to handle stressful situation. Instead of trying to rapidly change my breathing I started to calm down by simply being aware of my breathing, analyzing it. So in a couple of minutes I end up feeling completely changed.

Therefore, throughout the day the more you pay attention to your breathing the more you improve your life quality. However, in order to obtain optimum results it is essential to do the exercises shown in the book.

Speaking of breathing exercises (known by the experts as breathing experiments) I would also recommend Ways to Better Breathing by Carola Speads. Speads`book is my favorite.

The One Thing That Will Never Leave Us...
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-10
Our breath is the only thing that is with us from beginning to end...the breath is who and what we are...the breath is interconnected with Spirit and every time we breathe in and every time we breathe out, we are breathing in and out the One Creative Power that creates all of life out of Itself...

The breath does not judge. The breath does not condemn. It is the breath's job to sustain us at all times. I dare you to sit and breathe deeply for one hour. I betcha can't do it. If all of us decided to just spend one hour breathing deeply in and breathing deeply out, this world would be transformed in a day...it really would...because deep breathing calms us, centers us, awakens those parts of us that we have stuffed, repressed, or have just wanted to forget.

I've gotten to about 26 minutes of deep breathing and I cried like a baby. I had such stirring memories - future as well as past - as to what life could truly be about. Just like the book says, when we free our breath, we free our life.

That shallow little nose and mouth breath we do is not breathing, just like those Chicken McNuggets and that extra large coke is not sustenance. We need to spend time nourishing our bodies, our minds, our hearts, and our souls in ways that replenish us and awaken us to the beauty that just sits and waits for us to finally notice...

Breathe!

I mean, really, really breathe...it is a gift...it is the gift.

Peace & Blessings.

I learned way more just reading articles off the internet about the CO2 to O2 ratio and the importence of keeping CO2 in your system. To me this is a non-sensical book good for anyone that has no real breathing issues...I strongly recommend finding something else to read.

Choosing Life through the Breath

We all know that we cease to be alive when we can no longer breathe. Dennis Lewis, however, understands that we cease to truly live when we are not consciously choosing to connect with our breath. Living the fullest expression of ourselves requires expanding our self knowledge, along with the expansion of our breathing. Mystics through the ages have understood this concept, and Lewis illustrates it beautifully in his book. You will learn ways to support your spirit, mind, body and heart through conscious breathing, and thus be much better prepared for change and challenges in your life.

Clever use of the 13 full moons in a year with interesting side notes from cultures all over the world. This book will help guide anyone trying to make healthy food choices, but the author also provides an explanation as to why these choices make sense nutritionally and several recipes at the end of each chapter. A must read for anyone interested in improving diet and overall health.

Jessica Prentice is a moon goddess.

This is an incredible resource for those hungering to find a more complete, more functional way to eat than low-carb or low-fat.

Prentice weaves information about food and nutrition with myths, legends and indigenous practices as well as her own impressions as a chef and food activist. It's packed with cooking and food history from around the world. But it also reads like a very personal, relatable journey. I especially appreciate her including the struggles with food she had as a young woman.

This is on my Christmas list to give to everyone this year.

Excellent!

A great book!
The vegetarianism essay alone is worth the purchase price, but other parts of the book are just as engaging.

I've never met the author, but after reading this book I feel like she is an old friend.

I love this book on so many levels.

Jessica Prentice does a beautiful job with both her writing in each chapter and her recipes. I love learning about various cultures, the thirteen moons and the environment. Her recipes are also delicious and a real help to someone who's trying to eat based on the seasons and local produce. I first checked this book out from the local library but had to have it for the recipes. Definitely a good book!

A must have book. I recently found out I have a dairy allergy. Not being familiar with allergies, I wasn't sure what my options were with food, and I came across this book and it has made the switch so easy. It has been a major blessing to me. From all the research she has shared with all the wonderful recipes. Thanks Alisa for all your hard work and making the switch to dairy free so easy. Couldn't have done it with all your great resources.

Whether you're having trouble finding good dairy-free alternatives out there, want to cook for meals for yourself, or find inspiration to seek out fresh flavors within a healthy diet, this is the book for you. It's so much more than just a cookbook, too- It includes extensive lists of dairy-free food, skin and hair products, and more. Everything you need to know about cutting milk out of your diet, why you should, and what the benefits are, are abundantly clear. If you're not sure where to start, or even if you've been dairy-free for years, you should definitely check this book out!

I recently found out that I am lactose intolerant and this is the first book I bought. It was everything that I needed and more!!! It gave me all the information I needed on lactose intolerance and milk allergies. The recipes are also very useful and can be adapted to fit other diets (vegan, gluten-free, etc.).
I highly recommend "Go Dairy Free" to anyone who has decided to cut dairy out of their diet (for health reasons or otherwise).

As soon as I began to browse through Go Dairy Free, I was in love. As a whole foods nutritionist, cook and baker, I naturally gravitated toward the recipes first, and can honestly say that I would like to try out every single one! Besides being dairy-free, the recipes are also healthy and can be made easily by the home cook--and they all sound delicious, from the wine-and-cheese spread to the apricot scones to the Chinese 5-Spice pasta to the brownies (and brownie cookies!).

But the recipes are only one part of this amazing reference book: Alisa also provides a host of tips and tricks for the home cook who's avoiding dairy. You'll find ways to replace milk, cream, cheese, butter, and any other dairy product you can think of, plus hints and tips for acquiring sufficient calcium (it's much easier than you think), to information about milk allergies and why they're so common, to eating in restaurants, to feeding kids with dairy allergies, to shopping and other reference sources through blogs, books, and websites.

It's a comprehensive, thorough, well-researched and engagingly written guide that you'll turn to over and over (oh, and did I mention brownies?).

Makes going dairy free easy!

If you are considering giving up milk and other dairy products for health or ethical reasons, but are not sure how to wisely go about it, then I highly recommend Go Dairy Free by Alisa Marie Fleming. To help you ease into dairy-free living, this excellent book provides you with tips and resource information for revamping your daily diet, restocking your kitchen and medicine cabinet, changing cosmetics and body care products, and, very importantly, handling eating away from home. It also provides readers with insights and answers to many of the common concerns and questions associated with dairy products, such as milk allergies and lactose intolerance, effects on weight and cholesterol levels, ties to autism and ADHD, and various forms of cancer, just to name a few.

Those not used to diligent label reading will really appreciate the author's lists of obvious and hidden dairy ingredients and derivatives. And before delving into the recipes (yes this book contains over 225 of them!), she offers up advice on spicing up yours meals and snacks without relying on dairy products, shopping and money-saving tips, and kitchen gadgets that will make it easier to go dairy free. If you are new to living dairy free, you will be thrilled by the extensive dairy-free (and egg-free) substitution section, which includes both store-bought and recipes for homemade items like beverages, spreads, cheeses, sour cream, and yogurt.

I'm still working my way through the many recipes in this book, but thus far I have enjoyed the Effortless Overnight Oat Milk, Pillowy Whole-Grain Pancakes, Cheesy Broccoli Soup, Sesame Soba Noodles with Calcium-Rich Kale, Lightly Herbed Pasta Alfredo, and Simply Vanilla Frozen Yogurt. With the winter holiday baking season in full swing, I am looking forward to trying out many of the cookie recipes with a glass of Coco-Nog. So if you are a vegan like me, lactose intolerant, or just looking for some additional dairy-free recipes to add to your repertoire, this book is perfect for you, and your tummy will be very happy!
